do budgies need the dark to sleep? when bertie was at his previous house, the old lady was in bed by 9 and didn't get up till around 10am, so bert was in the quiet and dark for at least 12 hours. in our house my o.h dosn't go to bed till midnight and i'm up at 6am so berts only in the dark for the maximum of 6 hours. is this enough for him or should i get a cover and if so how long do they need? i would hate for him to be tired.

I'd get him a cover. They like a bit more sleep than us. 10 hrs or so is around normal I think. It also means he'll get used to going to sleep at a certain time, and it will provide a little extra warmth in winter. Plus we get a bit of time without being on budgie duty, checking he's not up to mischief. (A bit like popping the kids off to bed!)
My bird is in the living room, but he goes to bed when it gets dark outside. (It gets dark earlier here in Oz in summer too as we're closer to the equator). I pop the cover on and we can continue with the lights on as long as we want. It also means we get him out of the way while we're having dinner, as he can be a bit of nuisance while we're eating!

Cant agree more with what the others have said IMO we have always had a cover as the birds then get conditioned to know what is happening like part of a routine and of course the warmth in winter, so personally I would get one. You can actually make one (if you are into craft) or just obtain a dark sheet

i never needed covers for my house budgies ... they just went back in there cage.. when they wanted to sleep ...
but i can see there is good reason to use one ... as not all budgies are the same ...
mine would normally stay out with me..... till i went to bed ....
or as i said... go in to the cage to sleep if they were tired....
