Hi
Late last night I found Stumpy ( about a year old) sitting on floor of flight his leg sticking out underneath him (he has not been able to fly properly since birth has no tail feathers, but has been getting about OK in aviary, plops down on floor runs around and climbs up wire)
I brought him inside I think his leg may be broken, can anything be done for this, or will I have to have him put to sleep
Thanks
Chris

Don't quote me but from what I have heard is some birds do adapt depending on the type of injury and the location of that injury. I have heard of some birds with broken toes coping just as well and even birds who have them amputated.
Do you have any pictures? In any case I would seek veterinary advice, but in the meantime make sure he is in a hospital cage so he can't do any further damage to himself and keep him warm.
Let us know how you get on. Fingers crossed for little Stumpy x

I can't really add anything to what Sam has said. I know some birds can recover from leg injuries. Poor Stumpy. Someone with experience of this situation may be able to give you more definite info.

Thanks for messages, seen vet who said break was high up leg so could not do anything, said it would probably heal in a week or so, given him a drop of metacam which he has got to have daily.
Vet said leg could mend but be sticking out. Is there anything I could do to make sure leg properly heal , as is done for splay legs in baby budgies
He suggested keeping him on cardboard or on a blanket
Thanks
Chris
Have to go back to vet in two weeks

Sorry to hear this, I hope that Stumpy will be ok. I am suprised that the vet didnt splint the leg? so that it heals and that he doesnt hurt himself any more?

The break was at very top of leg.
Have been trying to get him to sit with leg under him and not sticking out. He is now in a large plastic container sitting on a tea towel for softness

Thanks for your messages Stumpy is moving about, does not seem distressed. I am trying to get him to keep his leg under him, but seems to stick out. Hopefully it will heal ok. Got to take him back to vet next week

Is there not any way to splint the leg, something like plaster, elastoplast, stiff foam, a matchstick in some kind of combo way?
See if the vet can put his thinking cap on.
