Has anyone had this problem with their budgie? When Oscar has a poo, more often than not it sticks to his feathers, then he has another poo and that sticks to the first one. Eventually he gets a big lump - all hanging from his feathers. He obviously finds it uncomfortable as he tries to get it off himself but can't quite get it. I have to regularly pull it off or put him in the bath to soak it off. It is definitely sticking to his feathers and not his bum!! It is such a nightmare having to keep catching him, he's getting more evasive as he knows I'm after him. ;D

Just a thought, are the consistency of his poops normal? Not sure as to what might be the problem here, maybe one of the staff members would know? Maybe one of the staff can move your thread to the health section where you may get a better response? Someone am sure will be able to help you soon

I've had one of Munchy's do that before, but usually he has some rather bizarre bouncing poop which has a tendency to roll down a slope. I think Sam has a good idea about asking in the health section, and perhaps you could get a picture to put up? Not a pleasant picture to have to take but it might help other members give you some clues as to what might be happening.

You could try trimming the feathers around his vent and seeing if this helps. If the poo itself is normal, it would seem it is merely catching on his feathers.

I agree with Hezz i would also be looking carefully at the birds diet

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions. The poo is really quite normal (I think) and Oscar's diet is the same as Harvey and Harvey doesn't have this problem. I feed them with Trill and the tonic seed that I got from Haiths. Oscar has started eating his veggies (albeit very small amounts) that is corn, carrot and broccoli. Not sure if I could get a pic Ira !! but the poo is only attached to his feathers. Sam - some days he seems ok, and others there is a build up from overnight.

Maybe it is a "feather" issue as the others have suggested so perhaps he just needs a hair cut! Let us know how things go for Oscar (he is such a beautiful birdie)

I had a budgie (Ozzie) who had the same problem. He was given some antibiotics and all was well again. Eventually after it recurring several times, a specialist vet told me he had polyuria and it was this which was diluting the poop and causing it to stick. More antibiotics and painkillers followed. I had to administer twice a day via syringe - needless to say he soon realised the horrible woman(me!) was advancing again and our relationship did suffer for a while! Eventually (and totally unrelated I must stress) he developed a tumour elsewhere (on his back) and had to be put down. He was a happy bird before this and I believe the polyuria would have sorted itself out with the treatment. Good luck but I advise a specialist vet.

My ada gets that every so often, i had her bum feathers trimmed at one point as it kept happening every day but then it stopped and now only happens every so often. The poops look normal but for whatever reason get stuck in the bum fluff.

Perhaps a bit of an open door, but have you treated the bird for worms? The first sign of worms is exactly what you describe, which happens because their poo softens. I have an outside aviary and my budgies catch worms from wild bird's poo that drops into their aviary. I have to treat them regularly and dosing their drinking water seems to do the trick. I have 2 different type of chemicals from the pet shop I give them every other time to ensure they drink the water, as they become "street wise" to the taste. If your bird has recently been purchased or spends some time outdoors this is worthwhile considering.

Thanks ppval, I am not too worried about it now. It doesn't happen all the time.
Marleen - I have had Oscar since 25th Sept and he is an inside bird so I don't think it would be worms, but thanks for the thought.
