just wondered what time you put your baby's to bed during summer and winter? In summer as it stays lighter longer Elf goes to bed around 9:30pm but now I'm putting him to bed at 8pm..Just wondered if it should be when it goes dark but that would mean in the heart of winter 4pm..... This is my first full winter with him so not to sure how the budgie bed time should go

Everyones birdie is different - in my experience budgies always want to go to sleep when it gets dark despite whether they have a cover on or not. We tend to cover them up only partially at the same time each night so it becomes routine then they usually sleep when they are ready to. We cover them up completely by 7pm every night whatever the time of year. But that's just us, everyone will be different. Obviously it also depends on what time you get up in the morning too.

the fact that they are now house budgies.... its up to you to set a time for them to sleep ... or if there free flying all the time like my George was ... only every going in his cage to eat ... he decided when he wonted to go in to sleep... or i would just pop him in to his cage and close him in as i was going to bed .. . as the others have said all budgies are different... find what works with you ....if its stricked routine ...then thats it for you ... i was flexible with times as he was always with me till i went to bed he wouldnt leave my side ... so that was how it was with me .... just find some way that fits in with what your happy with..

Moogie - as Sam says all budgies are different and they fit in with your routine and just like Mick says too. My two (although I haven't had them very long) go quiet as it gets darker in the afternoon. They are really quiet from about 4.00 pm and well on the way to sleepy time so I cover the top and back of the cage around 5.30 and then completely cover them about 6.30. I think they like a routine so do the same thing every time, but that's just my opinion.

From day one, I decided I was going to give my buds a routine that was as close his natural routine as I could. He pretty much goes to bed as it begins to get dark, so it's a different time in summer and winter. Maybe 5.30-6pm in winter, 7.30 to 8pm in summer. It's a routine that also suits us as it means he's in bed when we're having dinner. It took a bit of training but he eventually learnt to take himself off to bed as the sun began to set.
He gets a bit of time in the cage without the cover while he has a bit to eat, checks out a few toys, and decides where he wants to roost. I'll then put his cover half on (the half Nelson), then fully cover him up about 30mins later (the full Nelson). (Boo's original name was Nelson)
However, remember that in Australia our summers don't have those long light nights as in England, so it gets dark quicker and earlier. On the other hand, our winters don't get dark so early.

What everyone else has said. Fit him into your routine, and try to make his routine as routine as possible. We all like structure in our lives, and budgies are no different.

Mine go to sleep as sun goes down and they wake up as sun rises, obviously different timings in summer and winter. They take naps during day in summer.
For a pet owner with a budgie or two in the home, the best thing would be to give them 12 hours covered sleep time regularly everyday. For example from 8 to 8 or so as suits the owner.

Thats good then, as long as both of you are comfortable with your routine then thats all the matters

That's good to keep a somewhat similar routine in both seasons, as Sam said

Munchy just goes to bed when he wants to. It's easier in the summer because he just flies out for food and then stays there. In winter we actually have to take him out because it gets dark so early that he's not hungry and just starts falling asleep in the living room, and we have to shut the door to keep the heat in. Summer he goes to bed at about 7:30 and at around 4 - 5 in winter, depending on how dark the day is. Nan feels sad that he has to go in early. It will be nice when the solstice comes
