As a lot of birds don't seem to like veggies, what about mixing a small amount of Cod Liver Oil in with food which they will eat, has anyone tried this? It is very high in vitamin A D and E. I haven't given it to our budgies as fortunately they do eat fruit and veg, but I do put a small amount in the parrots food and give it to the dogs and cats.

Some people use Cod liver oil for budgies. They either put it in soft-food or soak seeds in oil.

I use a product called the Good Oil which is added to their seed and left to soak for at least 4 hours. It has all those added extras too, especially made for birds. Even though my budgies too love their greens, I still add it all the time.
Thanks for putting up the thread, Lesley. This could be very helpful to those worried about their buds.

A couple of years ago our parrot started to nibble his feathers to the point that you could see his flesh in parts. I hadn't a clue why he was doing this because he wasn't bored or left on his own, then my son was watching a programme on TV about a parrot doing exactly the same, the vet said it was vitamin A and D deficiency so as cod liver oil is very high in these I made him a cake with oats, eggs, peppers, peas, carrots, sweetcorn, cheese, garlic powder and cod liver oil, baked it and fed it in small squares. He loved it, no waste, so he has had this every day since, as well as his seeds and fresh fruit. I couldn't believe the difference in his feathers within a few weeks, they quickly re-grew. I was worried because I'd read that once a plucker always a plucker but thankfully he hasn't done it since. Our cockatiel, Basil is 16 now and he started plucking his feathers at an early age and they've never grown back. He's happy in himself though and loves all the attention from the budgies. They take it in turns to preen 'the old man' although they don't know what to make of his crest and he ends up with either a comb over or a middle parting, he looks so funny ;D

So happy to hear that BAsil is now a happy and healthy cockatiel, albeit with a comb-over . Maybe I should look into CLO for Smudgie. I have since discovered that my own mum needs Vit D injections twice a year, despite her love for being in the sun! Maybe Smudge is like my mum but in budgie-form.

Pun excused Sam That's really surprised me Hezz about your Mum needing vit D injections, I thought we absorbed lots of it from the sun, just goes to show how different we all are

Normally, yes, Lesley. And as I mentioned she has no fear of the harm the sun can do, so isn't one who covers up to go outside. She figures she has her quota of wrinkles at the age of 78. It seems there is something in her makeup that prevents her from either converting the UVB rays to vit D or absorbing it into her body.

Cod Liver Oil has Vitamins A and D plus iodine.
If the seeds are covered with cod liver oil and allowed to soak for at least 12 hours it will absorb through the kernel.
The only danger is in warm weather the oil can quickly go rancid.
i use wheatgerm oil as it fights ageing, promotes health by improving blood circulation and it improves the immune- nervous system.
It is unrefined oil that is obtained from the germ of the wheat kernel, it is the richest source of Vitamin E than any other vegetable oil. It also has a high content of Vitamin A and Vitamin D and is rich in protein.
Wheat germ oil is essential in promoting feather growth which is needed in baby and moulting birds.
Again like cod liver oil it can go rancid in warm weather and must be offered in small qtys and changed often.

Thanks for all these suggestions - will definitely get some cod liver oil. I am guessing just oil made for human consumption will be fine for the birdies?
