Evening everyone ;D
Sorry I haven't been around a lot lately, I'm hoping to start being more active very soon. My life seems to have been taken over by work, the budgies, and the aviary.
I have a dilemna with my aviary budgies, to be perfectly honest they are driving me insane right now! With it going so dark early now I have set their nightlight to come on at 4pm so that they have time to get back inside and settle down before its dark. I always try to shut them in at half four but it isn't always possible and several of the daft things have taken to sitting outside in the dark. Which means I then have to shoo them in, or in the case of the babies pick them up and take them inside.
I want to make the most of the mild weather, before they have to start staying insde, because I believe that the fresh air is important to them but I am worried that they will catch a chill if they are sat out in the dark for too long
I don't understand why they have started doing this, its only the past 2/3 weeks and its not just the young ones, the adults are just as bad. Last night and tonight I had FIVE budgies to get back inside! Any advice on what to do? Other than the obvious shut them in earlier lol! Orwhy they might have started doing this, maybe its just the early nights confusing them?

i think its becuse the light isnt bright enough in the aviary .... and they just sit there outside with it slowly getting dark till its to dark to fly ....
you could always try putting the main light on a timer... so its bright in the aviary and dark outside ..
then the night light on a timer to kick in about a hr later and the main light going off just after that ..
ps ...just another thought there isnt any food outside for them is there ... if so stop putting it out there ... ,
I like Mike's idea - make the light inside brighter than the out-. You can only give it a go anyway, Rachael. Nothing to lose (except a bit of electricity - if yours is as expensive as ours is now, I understand you being reluctant to part with hard earned money!)
We are not Vets, Avian or otherwise. If you have any serious doubts about your budgies' health an appointment with an Avian vet should always be your first point of call.
Do you think it's because we put the clocks back Rachael? That was a couple of weeks ago, and when you noticed your birds doing it. Ours are inside and covered at night but since the clocks changed they've been waking an hour earlier even though it's dark.
Rachael, this is weird, im having the same thing with mine at the moment. We went out the other day and didn't get back until 11pm so i hadn't shut the flight door, when i went out to do it they were all sat outside and it was freezing, you can imagine the run around i had with them trying to catch them all in the dark, they all just went into panic. Its been the same ever since, im having to get them back inside at tea time and shut the door, this has never happened before, they all usually go back in on their own when it gets dusk and i go out about 7ish to shut the door for the night. I thought at first that something had frightened them because they are so reluctant to go inside. I thought it was just my lot, i wonder what it is. I haven't got any form of lighting in the inside and never had but maybe this is my problem, i will get a night light tom and see if that makes any difference. Strange one .

That is strange! I can't understand it either, they were fine this time last year, the only thing I could think of was that it was the young ones that were staying out because they are a bit daft but the adults are just as bad.
Update: My dad has bought me a light that sort of clips on and we are going to put it on a timer so that it just comes on for an hour to see if that helps

Well done Rachaels Dad! Would be interested to see what happens

Brand New Budgie
I leave an energy saving light on 24 hrs a day for my budgies and they all go in quite well, occasionally I have had to shoo a few of the young ones in, but usually by 4.30pm once I have put my chickens away they are all inside and settling down. I am going to get round to fitting a dimmer switch.
I havent got any heaters in there yet, but will be doing after just reading on another thread that we are expecting the coldest winter in 100 yrs !!

Brand New Budgie
Thanks Mick, but I'm going to the Stafford show on 2nd Dec and hoping to pick up a couple of bulbs - daylight bulbs i think they are called, they are blue and I can fit a dimmer switch on them.
