I don't know whether you have to or not, but I believe it takes a lot of cooking. Alas, I can't tell you how as I've never had to cook other than baking and occasionally at high school. Nan says you boil it until it's soft

Definitely raw for budgies. They like it crunchy, like raw carrot.

"Nan says boil it till it's soft." That's about all the advice I can give you too, Moogie - but that is for yourself obviously. Elfie will have his in the raw state. I have cooked it, but I think it depends how old (of course, too, how big) it is. Just don't cook it in your best white sweater! Hezz' pearl of wisdom for the day.

Here's a really delicious and really simple way to cook beetroot (for you, not Elf) It's spicy, but good.
1kg beetroot (cooked, peeled, diced fairly chunky) (Cut into quarters and just boil until it's soft, but not mushy) 1teaspoon minced chilli pepper 2 tsp cracked black pepper 2 tablespoons malt vinegar 2 tablespoons brown sugar
Combine all ingredients in saucepan and heat slowly until well heated through. Nice with meats.
Adjust the chilli if you don't want it so hot.

Ok - hints on cooking raw beetroot, it obviously depends on the size. If they are very large, simmer them for about an hour (yes an hour) you can stab them with a thin pointy knife about 3/4 hour thru cooking time and you will be able to tell if they are still hard in the middle. I usually get medium size ones and cook them for about half an hour and test with a knife then cook them a bit longer if necessary.

You can roast beetroot like you would potatoes. It's yummy! That's for yourself of course... As already said, raw for the buds. They like the leaves too.
