Today marks one year since Pepper passed and I wanted to write something in her memory. Pepper was a zebra finch, and a very pretty one at that. I still miss you, my Peppery little lady, with your beautiful black cheeks. And I still remember those feelings when I first saw you, and I just knew you had to come home with me - nothing could've stopped me - it was just meant to be, even for such a short while as it was. Although I wish you could've stayed with us longer (you would have loved living in the aviary), I am so grateful for the time I had you. I was looking back at pictures of you - if only I had more of them, but lessons are learnt from mistakes made. It may be too late for more of you, but I now have hundreds of the other birds - it's bordering on silly amounts! I remember that you were perhaps not the cleverest finch in the charm, but your curiosity and persistence in working out something new (for example - how to get from inside the cage to outside the cage) was adorable - it makes me smile just thinking about it now I've started to ramble and I've said a bit more than I was intending. This may seem daft, writing to a dead bird - but it makes me feel closer to you, as though you know you're still in my thoughts. I just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten you, Pepper - and I won't. Keep flying free, my angel - guide those in the charm who have joined you since you left, and watch over those who remain. With love, for my Peppery angel xxx

Lovely sentiments, Starzie. I am sure she and the others are looking out for the rest of your flock.

Your post had me in tears. I don't think it is silly at all-writing about/to a 'dead bird' I think we need to feel all our emotions fully and expressing them in thoughts, tributes etc is just a way to help us remain close to them. I think about my little ones who have moved on and it always brings me to tears.-like right now.
....it just helps. Thank you for sharing.

Pepper and the gang are talking about you now, Starzie, remembering all the good times you had together. It's nice to think about those times and smile.

Thank you all for your lovely words I just wanted to do something to mark the date, as I have done with other birds before Pepper and I expect I will do with those after. She really did leave us too soon - as they all do I suppose, I don't think anyone is ever ready to say goodbye - but it's just as important to celebrate their life and time with us as it is to mourn their passing. I did feel a bit sad when I wrote this to Pepper, but also happy, as I was thinking about her and what a wonderful little creature she was. It never ceases to amaze me how animals so small can have such massive personalities, from curious and sweet like Pepper to downright nuts to my Squeak was
