I was at our local pet shop yesterday and according to the assistant a lovely little blue budgie who had a pinky purple cere , no visible iris and still has baby bars was a girl?? Now, I am not good at this boy girl thing but always thought that a pinky purple cere was a boy and white/blue was girl. They aslo have a lovey yellow one and a creamy whitish one with faint lemon and blue marks- no visible bars on any of these 2 but is that because of the colouring?? How do you age and sex these ones? Thier cage is on the floor with another on top so photos are difficult. I will try to get some today

Some male budgies can have pink cere and no iris throughout their whole life. It depends on mutations so it's almost impossible to tell with pictures.

Thanks everyone, it is easy to confuse me when it comes to sexing budgies Barrie that is what I thought but as that purple sometimes looks pinkish the petshop aotomatically assume girl! I did go today and take photos but it was hopeless, and to be honest, the cream one didn't look like a baby, I know I am inexperienced but my gut said adult Unfortunately I am at thier mercy as I really want a baby boy and unless I am willing to travel far and wide this may be my only choice. I have one local breeder in the pipeline, so watch this space

I do BB but either they have nothing or not interested, I think it's because II only want one bird It's not as if I am after a cheap deal, I am willing to pay for a nice bird, I am always amazed that Kiwi and Lilly were only £20 each I get soo much joy from them. I am in touch with a breeder close to me at the moment, just waiting on photos so hopefully I will get something. I wish I lived near you or Barrie, both your birds are beautiful Just to say BB, you are a very helpful person and always answer our questions. It is noted and appreciated

Its a nightmare, i also saw a beauty in the shop a few weeks ago that i would have said was a boy without a doubt but it was in with all the females and the shop owner was convinced it was a girl. If you especially want a boy its a difficult one.

I have been down this road twice already and I would love to take a little one from the pet shop but I just don't want to take the chance of any problems. A few weeks ago I was in and saw one little guy sitting all fluffed up and looking really weak. The shop owner said it was just the stress of the move No way, I am far from an expert but he looked awful. I went back the next day and he was gone . The owner said someone bought him but there is no way, I think he died

Its a tough one, having said that my Sky was from this same pet shop and she lived to the ripe old age of 13 and raised two lovely family's, and never a trip to the vets. I guess its a lottery and trying to look for all the signs of good health. I brought a beautiful budgie from a very good breeder years ago and he only lived until he was 4 so you never can tell.

It is definitely a lottery, trying to get what you are looking for. I think that sometimes it is actually easier to tell the sex with a photo. I have been tempted to try this. Take photos of the bird in question and then look and then decide if male or female. I don't do too badly with photos, but in the flesh I um and ah like you wouldn't believe.

Have you seen my new babies, in pretending to be quiet post, they are all boys i'm told and you can see their ceres quite clearly, to give you an idea. They are all between 6-7weeks old.
