I am just asking in general. Some breeders tell me that they cannot sex baby budgies even after 8weeks until they are about 4 months old, as it is too difficult. Do any of you breeders agree or am I just being told fibs Another question are Lutinos/ yellow budgies more difficult to sex than others? Thanks

some people cannot tell the difference at a young age!!! I've sexed some of my chicks at about 14days upward sometimes younger!!! It can depend on the colouring as albino & lutino are not that easy includings some pied!!!

Sexing babies in the nest.
With baby budgies there's a way that has around a 75% chance of being right. I don't know if it works on other parrot type species as I've only kept budgies since learning it myself so I've not had a chance to try it out on other species...
If your a breeder, you may have noticed that the cere of budgie nestling's vary slightly. This can be seen more clearly if you have a brood to compare with each other. A single babies sex will have to wait while you have had a little experience. When examining a brood of young in their nest box you will notice the little differences. Young cocks will have a smaller cere, it will be pink, the nostrils will be small. When compared to the young hens, which have a more bulbous cere, paler with white around the nostrils which are also bigger. Good baby photo's that reproduce well to illustrate the differences are hard to come by. It is easier to practice on your own birds..... With birds of the sexlinked (Pink eyes)varieties you are better only using only one parent so P,eyed chicks will be of opposite sex. ........B.J.

Some breeders can sex budgie chicks at 7 days old. At this age you have to observe their cere color a few times a day.

Thanks everyone, the reason I asked was I really want a male baby and one brreder who is close to me told me that he cannot sex them until they are about 4 months so I really won't know what I am getting. I am assuming I will get one abour 8-10 weeks. However he did mention he had lutinos and a pied so maybe that is what he means

This is strange that a breeder cannot sex his chicks until 4 months old

Thanks very much BJ, I am getting better at this. I have emailed the breeder to see if it is just Lutinos etc he can't sex as I really need someone I have confidence in.
The last one had me stumped too ;D
