Any readers on here? Thought it'd be a good idea to have a thread where we can recommend/talk about books. Just about to finish my first Terry Pratchett book 'Colour of Magic' and it's been Okay., not sure what to start next. Last book I've read that I'd recommend would probably be 1984 (working my way through the classics) doubt there's many who haven't read it yet but if you haven't then try to, it's excellent

I am a big reader, Luke. I am more into murder/detective stories or PI type things, favouring the British writers over the American.

If you want a great book, a real classic, that mixes murder-detective with great writing, try Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment". (Not sure if I've spelt his name correctly.)
Some say it is challenging, but I remember reading it my 20s and being engrossed.

I enjoyed "Feel the Fear and Do it anyway!" But then I mostly read cookery, autobiography, budgie and self-help books. When I do have the attention span to read which is not often!

I've read that one Marianne, it's decent and it did give me a little boost when I was feeling a bit low on confidence.
Already have Crime and Punishment on the Kindle ready to read so that'll be next, cheers Stace.

I've really got into books recently. I especially listen to audiobooks. It helps pass the time on my long nightshifts!
There are so many great books I would recommend. I really really enjoyed 'The Help'. It's out at the cinema soon I think but the book was fantastic. 'We need to talk about Kevin' (also not out at the cinema) is also a great and slighly disturbing book.
If you like post apocalyptic books then 'The Passage' is very good although it's a long one.
As far as classics are concerned I think you can't beat 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' by Thomas Hardy. I have read and listened to that books a fair few times.
I'm in the middle of 'Behind the scenes at the museum' at the minute. It's ok, i'm enjoying it more as I get into it more.
The book that I found the most difficult was the Satanic Verses. Mainly due me not having a clue what on earth was going on at times but I persevered with it and by the end I didn't want it to end!
I'm always looking for recommendations for books so this thread is great!

Love reading Like my Wilbur Smith novels (got them all). The book that gobsmacked me most was James Michener's 'The Source' - it is a huge long book - couldn't believe someone could write that length of a story, I was fascinated. Going to have another read at it soon.

Lupin if you are looking for a book to keep you going for a while ( ) try "Poor Fellow, My Country" by Xavier Herbert. It is quite a good read although I was in my last year at school.......a long time ago!

Those Thomas Hardy books are great. I read many of them a long time ago, as my mother had a whole set of them when I was a kid. They were always so sad with all that messed up communication, and 'could have beens" ruining the characters' lives. Wouldn't happen today with our mobile phones. For crime writers, I like those Patricia Highsmith books as well. I just don't get to read much anymore, unfortunately. Have you discovered this site, Luke? It's designed for those kindle type devices. longreads.com/

Thanks Hezz I really fancy reading that, sounds right up my street If I get any Amazon vouchers for Christmas then I reckon they will be useful as big books are a bit pricey

My Pommie friend, Filiz buys all her books from Amazon - books here in Australia are really expensive. Myself, I am too stingy, and use the local library.

If you like a good story, told well and quite amusing generally try "Balham to Bollywood" by Chris England. I re-read it every couple of years

I like biographies but not of celeb's! I mean some of them aren't old enough to have had a life , read Nelson Mandela's a while back, an amazing man and great statesman. I read Dr Billy Grahams also and am waiting for his latest which is just about to be released here, called 'Nearing home', he never thought he'd live so long!! I read a lot of Christian material as I'm a Local Preacher, but I personally find it fascinating. Busy reading Alister Mcgrath's 'Why God won't go away' at present....engaging with the new atheism!

We were supposed to go and see the show 'War Horse' in London a while back but didn't make it so I bought the book. Someone told me it was for kids! Well I'm not sure about that but it was very enjoyable in fact, I enjoyed it so much I bought 'Born to Run' (about a greyhound) Farmboy and The butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo, thoroughly enjoyed them all and easy reads. You can probably tell from this that I love books and I love reading
