Hi everyone, Ive just signed up to here . I was wondering if i could get some advice! I have 2 beautiful budgies, one who is very sick. I came home from work friday evening to find my male with a sort of white mucus in his mouth and gagging. I took him to the vets immediately, who said he had a respiratory infection and sent me on my way with baytril. So ive been adding that to the water and also invested in some vitamin food for them. He perked up this morning, but now he is vomiting again. Is there anything i can do to make him more comfortable? Also his eyes go all leaky when he gets ill. Hate seeing him like this, breaks my heart! I shouldnt have pets as i get too attached to them! Haha. What are his chances of pulling through this? All answers greatly appreciated!

You should be giving it directly to him instead of in his water because there is no guarantee he will drink enough. The vet needs to give you a syringe and show you how to do it and you need to do this today because budgie go downhill very fast and you only have a short time to start helping them x

When I took Beauty the vet weighed her to see how much baytril to give her and it was only 2 lines up on the small syringe which she had to have direct into her mouth , I give it to her on the left side of her beak after reading on here somewhere that that was the best side as budgies can choke Racheal is correct in what she says in that you should be giving it directly and not in the water, also the water is going to dilute its effect

It is important to know the difference between vomiting and regurgitation.
A male budgie would regurgitate food from the crop to give it to his partner. A hen would only regurgitate food in the cock's beak if the cock is ill.
On the other hand, vomiting is due to physical problems or infections such as...
Poisoning or toxicity such as heavy metal, zinc and lead etc and also plant toxicities. Food intolerance, or high protein diet. Physical obstructions such as foreign body element in the crop or overfeeding etc. Bacterial crop infection. Crop mycosis such as Candida, Megabacteria or Avian Gastric Yeast. Parasite infestation. Concussion of the central nervous system. Tumours of the inner organs such as liver or kidney, etc. Cancer which can cause nausea and obstructions. And interestingly budgies can also have motion sickness when travelling which can cause vomiting.
If your problem is because of a crop infection, Baytrill should work within few days. If not it is something else.
If your problem is due to air sac mites, which can cause respiratory infection leading to vomiting in some budgies, you would need to use Ivermectin 0.1.
If it is yeast, fungal, or bacterial infection, this problem can be diagnosed through swab of crop contents and appropriate medicine should be used. You would need a good Avian vet.
Meanwhile make sure that you isolate the budgie and keep him warm in a covered cage with some heating. I am sorry I can’t help more. Barrie is travelling so you will have to wait for a few days for his advice.
