Hi all I have 8 incredibly destructive that love to destroy their toys. I really want to get them something to occupy them that won't be destroyed within few weeks. Does anyone know what toys safe and hardy? Nicola

I guess people living in open green areas are lucky that they can provide their budgies with safe branches and leaves every day. It is free and more natural

You could always have a look at my toys Nicola, I officially closed for Christmas yesterday but for a fellow forumer I am happy to extend that. A raffia bagel swing would be good, they seem to take my budgies a while to destroy and even then they still have the swing itself My facebook page is www.facebook.com/ozziesbirdtoys

Eucalyptus bark and branches are great for tearing apart. Plus they are cheap, as long as you can get hold of it. I collect big strips of bark, wash and disinfect, then just hang chunks up on the cage or play gym.
If you want a weekend project, you can also get some safe tree branches, like Eucy or Banksia, cut it into different rounds and drill thread holes in them. Get some thread material, sea grass cord is great, and make a hanging toy. You can add chunks of cuttlebone or iodine blocks and bits of bark as well. Cut them into chunks, make a hole, and thread them on as well.
I'll find a photo of some I made to show you in a mo.
Palm shredder packs are pretty cheap as well. You can thread that through the cage bars.

Rachael, Nicola is an Aussie, but I am sure she appreciates the thought. Nicola, I have to agree with Stace in that the more natural the material the better off you are. I am in constant scrounge mode and always on the lookout for anything I can use. For your aviary you really need some of those hollow logs cut up into lengths (not too long or they will think they can nest in it).

If you've got, or can get hold of stainless steel skewers, you can thread them up with whatever you've got. Palm shredders, bark, bells, beads, leather shapes, whatever you have. As they destroy them, just rethread. Here are the wood chunks, threaded with seagrass cord. I've just stuck whatever I have ready - yucca round, eucy bark, popsicle sticks, cuttlebone chunks, leather, palm shred. If you leave the cord thread long enough, you can rethread them with new stuff and reknot to replenish them. Or, you can add to the base by knotting another piece of seagrass around the main base thread, and adding stuff to that new piece of thead. Just remember to leave enough length to make knots.
