He doesn't look well today and stinks, I coudn't believe the smell The vet gave him Batryl one a day so lets hope it works. im sorry and dont wont to tell your vets his job .. but i think kiwi should be on THRICO PLUS . iv asked barrie to look at this thread ..so go by what he says.. as he will be right...

you need thrico plus or chevi col, baytril is no good , all birds must be treated every 6 months ..................any drinker that can be fouled with droppings needs to be thrown in the trash bin and replaced with sealed hampster bottles

Ok I read the latest advice on here and went round all my vets today only about 5 here. Nobody even heard of it. I contacted my friend who has tons of pets- not birds though and she gave me contact of good vet but not bird specialist. Bear in mind I was just walking in no apointment but the vet a young girl spent a lot of time looking up the names of the meds you all gave but she coudn't find it anywhere apart form abroad. She even phoned her senior but nothing. She told me that her close friend is an avian specialist, although he travels a lot, but she will try and contact him tonight and do more research herself. I have a lot of faith because she really tried hard and took the time to help me so I am taking Kiwi to her first thing tomorrow. I asked her what she would treat him with and she said baytril and also an anti parasite fungal not sure I remember as it was all a mad rush and close to school run time. I have lost faith in my original vet. He took one sniff of Kiwi and said sour crop he hardly even looked at him. I mentioned the meds but he said he has never heard of them and just talked over me. His advice was to put sandpaper with food bowls on the floor as they will eat the sand. Also mix grit and seed together with tiny spot of sunflower oil so I know they are getting grit. I told him my budgies don't know what the floor is. In fact the only thing it's good for is when Lilly chucks Kiwi off his perch! I mentioned there feet and sandpaper but he said as long as it is clean it wont hurt them I know Lilly loves to chuck the grit on the floor so maybe thats why Kiwi isn't getting any?? I cannot describe the smell it is awful like, fish that has been sitting for months. Do I need to treat Lilly, she looks fine but then so did kiwi. Poor little guy he still hasn't bitten anyone. He is such a placid little darling and I feel soo guilty for him. Anyhow I will let you know what happens tomorrow and thanks everyone I really appreciate your help

So sorry little Kiwi was poorly after all . I hope you get the right help that he needs. It amazes me, i think that ALL vets should be trained more in the bird field.

An answer will cost me £25 but you and Barrie are free, or is my bill in the post ;D Don't feel bad. I've used that site twice......it wasn't much help. The last time I wrote was about my cat's problem (stopped up nose, sneezing, and spraying my computer screen with mucous/salava when he sneezed)and was suggested strongly it was b/c he needed some supplement (lysine)which cost me about $45 b/c the vet tech thought he had herpes (common in cats, apparently). Didn't help b/c I couldn't get him to eat them, nor my other cat. Did some research and the vet concluded (unknowingly) his problem was his teeth which need to be pulled. He had a HUGE black abcess on his gums. I gave him antibiotics which helped, but need now to take him back to have his teeth pulled. Cost me $15 to talk to the tech + $45 for the lysine........just to find out I could have done as much by researching for myself. course I can't pull his teeth.......hence the need for the vet.

Thanks everyone i really don't know what me or Kiwi would have done without you. This was my first experience of vets and I feel soo sad and frustrated. Bear in mind it all really happened over 24 hours and with kids to drive back and forth and a husband recovering from an op it has not been easy to get help I am mad that my vet as he hardly even looked at Kiwi and didn't mention treating Lilly as I told him about her and all he done was give me a lecture on how to get them to eat more grit. Why none of them could find the meds mentioned here, I found them, well Mick did. but I was about to look properly anyhow. My vet admitted that he only treats about 2-3 budgies a year and these are usually old ones from passed on grandmas that need putting down However they should at least read all up to date research. I will order the meds tomorrow and keep my appointment with the new vet, as I said, she at least took the time to try and help and whilst I think the diagnosis is correct I still would like someone to actully examine him properly. I will tell you this though it has been a wake up call for me regarding caring for my budgies. I really only thought these things happened to large breeders and thought I knew everything when it come to hygene etc I wash thier cage everyday as I don't work but obviously something has gone wrong. I am going to look for a first class disinfectant and get glass bottles, I use stainless steel for everything but no more. I am just feeling soo scared of this happening again. On a lighter note Lilly is looking a bit lost, usually at this time she is chasing Kiwi around the cage ;D

I pictured you holding him down and trying to yank his teeth out ;D I think it's me that needs treatment not Kiwi . Hope all goes well

Outnumbered, how long have you have your birds? It is highly likely that Kiwi (and possibly Lilly) have had this all along - from before you got them. This is not your fault! You haven't done, or not done something you should have to have caused this to happen. Poor Kiwi! I am glad Mick was online for you and did some research on your behalf. It sounds like your young vet is the way to go in the future - at least you know she is listening! Fancy a vet recommending sand sheets! I hope and pray the Tricho-plus gets to you asap. Good luck, you Kiwi and Lilly. Fingers and feathers crossed this side of the world.

We all learn after having budgies for a while that normal vets are next to useless. They just don't know anything about birds at all. All they know to do is to prescribe Baytril, which only works for certain complaints. They get no training in birds at vet school.
A qualified, practising avian vet is the only option, but they are not easy to find.
Keep us posted and ask anything.
