Hi,
For six months I could not get even one living chick out of my flock of 10 pairs. In 6 months I have lost 60 chicks out of 60. Chicks start to die from ages of 3 days to 1 month. More information: • Pairs are experienced and have raised chicks before (ages of 1 year – 3 years) • Food they eat (Seeds, Egg food, soaked wheat, vegetables, carrots, corn on cob) • I have even changed all nest boxes, but no result. (nest boxes are same as I am using for last 15 years with good result) • No sign of physical sickness in birds. • 3 healthy birds died suddenly (all cocks)
Two years back I got same problem with some pairs but luckily it was solved without medication.
I have removed all nest boxes for a month and I am planning not to breed with them for 4 more months. I don’t have any idea about medication and whether I am missing something?
Your help is really appreciated as it is making me very worried, sometimes I think of leaving this hobby.
Thanks,

This is terrible and very saddening for any breeder. The first thought comes to mind that it is some sort of bacterial infection. This also explains the sudden death of three adults. I would remove all the birds and change or clean/disinfect the complete setup. I'll ask Barrie to have a look.

Budgie Buddy - Thanks and possibility is also that bacterial infection. from removing birds do you mean selling all existing birds and buying new birds or just disinfecting the setup and putting again same birds? Also I need to know what medication should i give them incase i would want to retain current birds. Thanks

he means remove them from the current aviary and put/keep them somewhere comfortable until you have cleaned and disinfected the aviary. then put them back in

Something is wrong Tariq , pneumonia springs to mind caused by the lack of airflow in the birdroom , you need a vent at one end of the birdroom and an extractor fan at the other .........................do you use chik crumbs which are laced with antibiotics and kill baby budgies.................bacterial infection i would rule out but take a look at all the feed stuff you are suppling .....................post a list of everything you feed them or add to the water

Hi Barrie and thank you. I have a big cage which is big enough for 12 pairs at least. The cage is located outside when I breed with them (avg temp 18 Degrees), but two sides of the cage are covered with plastic in order to avoid direct wind. List of All food that I provide:
1. Seeds (Daily) 2. Soaked Wheat (5 Days per week “I put the soaked wheat on their seeds and they finish them in 2 hours”) 3. Carrots (1 Day per week) 4. Boiled Eggs (1-2 Days per week) 5. Corn on Cob (2 Days per week when available in market) 6. Spinach (4 Days per week) 7. Chik Crumb is not available here (But I have been breeding for about 15 years without them with good result) 8. Nothing is added in water, I use normal tap water (Should I start giving them Mineral Water?)
Waiting for your advise, also not breeding with them for 6 months will help in solving this issue?
Thanks,

i would stop using items 1 , i would only used boiled water , put all of your birds onto daily essentials from the birdcare company..................i also think there is a bacterial infection and would advise all birds have a 7 day course of baytril

Hi No..... provided the seed is a canary millet mix its good You can give them this seed soaked as well. Your not giving a good enough variety of fruit & vegetables Just add this to the advice already given...B.J.
