Pickles claws seem to be getting really sharp and catching on our clothes, he has natural branches of various sizes in his cage and walks around all over too when he is out, is there anything else I can put in the cage to help wear them down, I wondered about a stone/cement perch but not sure Attachments:

Hi Helen. Pickles claws shouldn't need trimming if he has natural perches. But there are certain ailments that can cause budgie claws to grow more rapidly than normal. I don't see Pickles claws looking overly long from the photo, although it is rather blurred when at full size. An easy way to check: put Pickles down on a flat surface, like a table or kitchen bench. If he can walk around with his feet flat on the surface, all is good. His claws are not too long. If on the other hand the tips of his toes are raised up off the bench top because of the claw length, then his claws are overly long, and may need clipping. There is an exception to this rule, which is in the odd case of your budgie having deformed feet, like my little Fluoro has.

I should make mention too, that just because his claws get caught on your clothes, it is not necessarily the fault of the claws .......... maybe check out the clothes. Smudge used to get caught on a particular shirt I had and I thought her claws may have been too long too, but no, it was just the shirt.

I misread your question, Helen. Although I would be wary of filing his tips down - I noticed Smudge was inclined to not be able to grip properly after we did hers. Only did the once, she kept sliding off my shoulder then, so just left them be and we got used to it.

I've never used a file on my budgies nails, but I have had to cut a couple of them, mostly lazy hens ;D I use the type that you cut toenails with, the squeeze type, does that make sense? I trim a teeny tiny bit at a time, I'm talking literally a millimetre. I always have cornflour on hand just incase, because this stops bleeding. I've never made a budgies nail bleed though
