Hello budgie friends.
I have had a crazy day with columbo. I am writing this thread to raise awareness of fatty liver disease in budgies. Columbo is very happy chirpy and is in good condition no feather plucking and his plumage is really neat. Last week i noticed his beak was really overgrown so i ummed and ahhhd about clipping it myself thank god i didnt try! 2 days ago he started limping and this morning i took him to the avian vet. The beak being overgrown is classic sign of the fatty liver and the limp was a symptom of that. He had 2 injections and i have a whole load of meds for him to take for the next week. I am going to have to review his eating habits the vet recommended only leaving the seed in the cage during the day and giving veggies when we are home in the eve. I know Barrie has a whole article on this on his website which i read just now. Hopefully the little sweetie will be ok when his fat camp has finished, just wish i had read about it sooner because he really is very active and happy you would never know. just glad i am aware of it so i can help him. Haninia

I really hope everything goes well. Poor wee mite. Did your vet tell you how much seed a house budgie should eat?

Hi Haninia. Sorry poor Columbo is suffering from a fatty liver. Budgies are very prone to this particular ailment, and well done you for getting something done about it. Did the vet mention anything about more exercise? You mention Columbo is very active, is that in the cage or does he have plenty of out of cage flying time too? I wonder, is all, whether the vet regarded exercise as part of his fat/boot camp routine and should be increased overall, or whether a fatty liver has no bearing on how sedentary the bird is. This information would be very handy for others in the same position, if you don't mind sharing your vet's info.

I know that feeding tidbits of human type food can be a leading cause of Fatty Liver Disease. Bits of cracker, biscuit, fried stuff, toast with butter on it, table scraps. Things like that.
I don't like feeding those honey-style seed sticks either. Maybe they are okay, but I'm sure they are held together with fatty type substances and gums with heaps of preservative in them.

Thanks everyone for replying,
The vet said that the seed should be taken out of the cage in the evening and vegetables offered he said to do this either in the morning or eve to control the amount of seed. Also only about a tablespoon of seed should be given. As they can be greedy! Columbo is allowed out all day with the cage open so he can do as he pleases but he is a lover of running around on the floor and flying up to the cage to eat!. he does fly around but prefers to run on the floor. So the vet said to encourage him to fly more. He gave me a liver supp which i will continue to give him after the meds. I think he will be ok but his weight is a bit high 50grams!! so he needs to loose quite a bit. Will keep you posted on his progress
Thanks again for reading my post. Haninia xx

Can we see a pic of Columbo?
He is lucky to have you looking out for him.
Hope he is healthier soon.
I do think that it's also a genetic thing when they get a fatty liver. But of course changing the diet can always help!

Hi Marianne,
I have him on lock down at the mo. but will post a picture when he can come out. I think you are right about genetics as i dont give him treats only the odd piece of millet not the whole spray. He is quite 'round' in shape and my brother's budgie looks completely different. I think he may be an english budgie as he is bigger than most(but that could be because he is an over eater!) Anyway he is doing really well considering what was done to him at the vets. Two injections and a dremmel beak trim! Haninia xx

Thanks for the info, Haninia. I agree with genetics playing a large part in all this. Just look at family histories in humans! It sounds as though you have him well under control, too, which is good. Is the liver tonic something the vet supplied, or readily available? Again it would be nice to be able to point people in a specific direction if they are in the same situation. Can't wait for photos.
