hi, i've just checked my budgies eggs which have been laid about 10 days now, and there is now some droppings in the nest box and it generally looks very mucky in there. should i do anything about this or just leave them to get on with it?

Handling eggs is very tricky. Make sure that you know what you are doing ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Be careful adding dry shavings they can dry the eggs out and changing the smell of the nest box can make the hen abandon her eggs.leave shavings out in the open for a few days to absorb the moisture from the air. then sprinkle just a few at a time at the other end of the concave over a few days soot can pick the hens scent up.keep an eye on her behaviour when you put a few in(make sure it is just a few at a time). Like bb said touching the eggs can make them become addled. Sue

Do you mean that she is in the nest box but not sitting on the eggs?

I don't change the nesting materials until all the eggs are hatched. However removing any dirty bits like dried droppings won't disturb her.
