One of our hens (popcorn) has suddenly got what looks like a stye on her bottom lid. It disappears when she closes her eye but when it's open it's quite a large pink bulge. It doesn't seem to be bothering her at the moment. Does anyone know what it could be and if there's anything I can treat it with? Thank you

Can I just add that she and her two sisters have large red eyes. Are the 'inos' more susceptible to eye problems?

The cold weak black tea makes it appearance again - it is supposed to be good for eye problems Lesley. The other thing that Barrie recommends having (and using) is Golden Eye ointment, which I think is available from pharmacies, and particularly good for things like styes. Hope this helps Popcorn out. xx

Thank you Hezz, I'll get some Golden Eye ointment. Popcorn is still in with the other birds if I give her the tea will it be ok for the others too?

No Lesley and sorry! It is only reading back I realise I didn't mention that the tea is used as a compress-type thing to aid the eye and soothe it. Give me a slap, someone!!! How is Popcorn's eye today?

I should've realized Hezz, I must have been having a "Senior Moment" ;D Popcorn's eye is much better, thank you. I never imagined a budgie getting a stye!! I think because she has red eyes anyway it looked worse than it was.

That's great, then! It probably did look worse, but at least that made you act on it.

Mick I never realized how many ailments budgies could get till I joined the forum!! In fact I didn't know much about budgies at all looking back I know you used to breed 'inos' and we got 3 red eyed hens out of our 6 chicks. One is Lutino and 2 are cream. It was one of them (popcorn) that had the stye. I was wondering if because they have red eyes are they more prone to get problems with them? Thanks, Lesley.
