I'm looking forward to hearing about twiggy's progress... I think I'd put branches in the aviary instead of the whole tree if it was me- I've seen budgie destruction up close in my parents' aviary and it would be upsetting to send the tree to almost certain death- especially after what you've been through to get it now.

Probably take it out from time to time like its been suggested .....its in a pot so it will be easy to just take it out but it will be a long time before that one goes in there , the other one I bought got a lot more branches so I will probably be able to put that in when aviary is up and finished.

moonkira *Julie*.... You'd be furious with me as I laughed almost out loud when I read through your thread. Sorry.... but it did sound funny. I can imagine how disappointed you are and I'd be miffed too if I knew I could have bought what I wanted locally and no one listened. The good news is you've now got two trees both of which have the potential to keep your budgies supplied with loads of useful branches...... But I wouldn't put either of them anywhere near the budgies or you'll have an expensive pile of sawdust in no time. Years ago I cut down a fair sized apple tree to make way for a bird house/shed. The tree trunk was put in one of the new flights with branches attached. Within a fortnight the branches had been stripped of bark and shredded. Three months later the trunk looked like something devastated by woodworm. My few budgies and cockatiels had chewed through the whole thing!! Be patient and let the trees grow - in the meantime ask neighbours if anyone has any apple wood prunings they could spare. It'll be very much cheaper. Good luck.

Julie, we have a giant bramley tree in the garden at the bottom of mine. It overhangs into my large dog run and I have full permission to chop off however much I like on my side of the fence (and a good quartr of the tree is in my side - apple pie anyone? The tree is ancient and massive, if you let me know what sort of length and diameter twigs/sticks you are after, I'll pop out with either secateurs or a saw and source you some. my email is offlist@gmail.com and if you send me an address I can bung them in the post. I'm already eyeing it up for some nice perches twigs for Steve when I next get into my woodwork shop and start on a giant cage.
We had an aviary when I was a little girl. Mum and dad put half the yule log (giant thing you needed two arms to get round girth wise) in the bottom of it to keep it out of the way until next Christmas. By the time they went to retrieve it a year later, the 30 or so rescued budgies in there had hollowed it out and created all sorts of little offshoots and depressions in it. I was very impressed with those tiny beaks!
