Hi all. Confession to make. Have still not applied the invemctin mite meds to the babies, have it here, but i'm scared to apply for two reasons. One it says on the bottle - could cause death and secondly i'm afriad to do it. Scared that i'll frighten them in doing it, not sure how exactly to do the "dotting on the back of head". Is it right into the root of the feather? Do i use a finger and have the med on it and rub it in or is there a better way? What if another budgie preens it and ingests it. My only experience of meds was trying to give Thala her anti b and f, and that didn't exactly go well. All advice welcome ( and i know it has to be done) - anyone want to do it for me?

It will only kill them if your poured the whole bottle on them, okay best way to do it is use a eye dropper suck some up into this than grab bird spread feathers on back of neck until you see the skin then squeeze the dropper and 1 drop will fall on the skin. Be aware to wash your hands well after woulds if you get a bad taste in your mouth your treated yourself aswell no harm done though.
The more you handle your birds the less stressed they become as show breeders we handle them constantly so they become semi tame. Hope this helps.

it's easiest for beginners if there are two of you. One person catches and holds the bird. (Hold the bird's head - the hard skull bit - between the forefinger and thumb with the palm at the back) The other quickly spreads the feathers at the back nape of the neck and drops a drop on the skin.
Just get all the stuff all ready to go, so the process is done as quickly as possible.
It's much easier than administering meds by mouth, so don't be concerned.

You need a glass dropper to apply the ivermectin to the skin of the budgies. Easy to get as a pharmacy. Plastic pipette-type things are too big. My son and I did ours not a problem.

Oh Ann I would happily do it for you if i could it is really simple to do, but i need to ask is it ivermectin 0.1% you have or the spot on you can get from pet shops that are in little pipette things. The first is the best one as the pet shop type is so messy and i don't think it works properly. You need to wrap each budgie in a soft cloth, don't grab them with your hand, and try to expose the skin on the back of the neck. You then apply one single drop, use the nozzle to rub it in slightly and you are done It is much easier if someone helps you though. I get my mum to apply the drops while i hold the budgie. Trust me it will be done in no time, i have 26 ratbags to treat next time, imagine that fun!
