I have had my first budgie for 2 weeks and I'm a bit concerned about him. He is extremely acrobatic likes climbing and doing all kinds of flips around the cage - Is this normal budgie behaviour as everyone who has seen him is quite surprised? On multiple occasions he has dropped from the top of the cage onto the floor and now he appears to have problems walking and sitting on his perches but he is still able to climb and happily hang upside down. When on the bottom of the cage his legs appear to be out at the sides instead of underneath him and he seems to shuffle around on his belly rather than walk. Any advice would be useful. I cant provide any photos at the moment as he has gone on his Xmas hols to mams. x

Welcome to forum It is perfectly normal for budgies to do acrobatic like moves in the cage. If he is all right, he is just being playful. As long as his posture problem or falling from cage is concerned, he may have his wings clipped or some genetic problem with feet and legs. I can't say much without seeing pictures.

I forgot to mention that he might have hurt his feet by falling down.

The way you have described it by him shuffling on his belly and his legs to the side sounds like splayed legs but will need pictures to confirm this.

deffo normal, although it usually gets worse if their in a small cage and not let out into a room to fly around for a bit. Kinda of like when your on a plane and can't move around much you get figgity and cramp when a budgies kept in a small cage it gets very figgity and cramp in it's wings.

Just a quick update. Darcy wouldn't stay still for a photo so we've had a trip to the vet today. He is displaying symptoms of splayed legs, which could be caused by an injury from falling. The vet feels any kind of hobble will cause him extreme distress. He has recommended trying to restrict his climbing, put everything on ground level and provide extra vitamins and calcium for a couple of weeks to see if things improve.
I have put cardboard around 3 sides of the inside of his cage and his food, water and perches have been put on the floor too. Might have to board the roof as well as he has already been hanging from there.

Splayed legs happen in the nest not by falling in a small cage i have birds in my aviary that suffer from french moult so can't fly they will get pushed off perches by other birds and fall around seven foot and their legs are fine.
Splayed legs can only be fixed when they are wee babes before the bones harden , birds with splayed legs should never be sold as pets.
