I got a very nice surprise about two weeks ago when one of my pet pairs unexpectedly produced a pink eyed chick. I thought cool an ino! Then a week later I noticed some dark patches on the wings and back, then thought, hang on this can't be an ino! Ok, so it has to be a lacewing or fallow. Chick at about 8 days old Parents of chick are both australian yellowface full body greywing. She is now two weeks old and has visible violet cheek patch. That means she has to be fallow because lacewings have very pale cheek patches. Now I'm confused because her tail and flights are coming out white/pale grey. Is it possible she might be a greywing fallow?

If both parents are Yellow Face Full-body Greywings, but only one is split for Fallow, then this pairing should give you... 50% Yellow Face Greywings 50% Yellow Face Greywings - split for Fallow But if both parents are Yellow Face Full-body Greywings, and both are split for Fallow, then this pairing should give you... 50% Yellow Face Greywings - split for Fallow 25% Yellow Face Greywings 25% Yellow Face Greywing Fallows So option 2 is more likely. I haven't seen a Fallow chick in person but this little one has quite a few grey feathers there. Let's see how this chick develops. Looks like it would be gorgeous little budgie

Thank you BB. I had no idea the parents were split fallow. I bred them about two years ago from birds bought from a pet shop. Annieones, I am also looking forward to see how this one turns out. I will post more photos soon.

Hi BB, the grandparents were: Cock- Australian yellowface cobalt/ recessive pied, blue, greywing. Hen-Sky violet greywing The little chick is 21 days old today. Double factor Australian Yellowface fallow greywing, not sure if she's/he's sky or cobalt because of the colour reduction caused by fallow and greywing mutations. And the nest mates. Chick 1 AYF cobalt greywing Chick 2 Double factor AYF sky greywing Chick 3 AYF cobalt greywing (clearwing?) Chick 4 is the fallow. Chick 5 AYF cobalt greywing Chick 6 sky greywing.

They are so cute. I want to steal them. This genetics malarky is pretty difficult to get hand of.

Wow, this heredity has become very very interesting. It explains everything about other chicks but nothing about the chick in question here. I can't find where this has got the Follow gene from. As for the chick's colors, it will be clearer after first molt.

One of the grandparents must have been split fallow, the gene was then past down to the parents. It was a very exciting surprise because I have been trying to breed fallows (show stock) for the past 3 years, without much luck unfortunately. 28 Days old.

Yes the gene must have been past down from grandparents but I think it has to come from both of them. The chick is looking more and more Greywing Fallow, very very gorgeous. The yellow and the red eye is giving so much grace and beauty to this bird I guess you found a Follow where you weren't expecing at all
