Hello – thanks for taking the time to read my introductory post….especially if you manage to reach the end!!
It tells a bit about me and my birds..
Working full-time and being a carer for my parents was very heavy going so I retired early in 2010. Since then I have been looking after my parents full-time 7 days a week. Apart from 2 nights away this year I’ve been busy every day and don't get the chance to get out and about very often.
When I have time I work on my allotment but, what with wet weather and 24/7 caring there’s been little time for anything much so my son eventually managed to persuade me to buy a budgie to brighten up my very routine days!
When I was a teenager I bred foreign finches. I saved and bought a double shed and my father helped me build two 6’ x 12’ flights. Later a friend emigrated so gave me his cockatiels and two or three budgies. Very soon they bred too.
Aged 18 I left for college. That was the end of my bird keeping days until recently more than 40 years later.
One Sunday, during my 4 hour weekly break, I was whisked off by my son to visit a budgie breeder. The plan was to buy a feathery friend – a budgie.
Plans often don’t turn out as expected do they?
“We” chose four birds and I asked if another two could be reserved for me once they were old enough to leave their parents. They were lovely birds and it was so hard to choose!!
A couple of Sundays later, having bought a fair sized cage and all the equipment & food, I was whisked back again to collect my 4 new budgies and make the final selection of two more.
That was weeks ago and I have been reading like crazy to try to recall all the things I have completely forgotten about bird keeping or never knew in the first place! I have 3 cock birds and 3 hens and my birds now have their adult plumage. My spare moments are often spent watching them and enjoying their antics.
I joined the forum as I am sure I am going to need some advice in the near future - that and I really enjoy reading about other people’s bird keeping!
So there we go…… I hope you’ll not get fed up with me asking for your help, advice, opinion and expertise.
I’m keen to Learn and totally hooked again!!
