Hi There,
I came across this forum as I needed some urgent advice on budgie recovery after a cat attack. Basically we had a cage with nesting box that came crashing down after Nelly the cat jumped on it. It must have fallen about 1 metre. The cage consisted of 2 Adults and 3 x 4 week old chicks. The male adult and custard (one of the babies) were out of the box, and the female adult + 2 other chicks were inside the box.
I jumped off the chair, yelled the cat off, and grabbed the nesting box that had come apart from the cage (to prevent the birds coming out).
The male adult was ok but Custard looked a lot like a fainting goat. We don't know but we thought her leg might be broken.
I quickly placed them in a sealed room with a low light and a heater with thermostat on all night, but I did actually cover the cage.
This morning we got up and found out that Custard seems to be steady on both her legs but we still have not seen her back to her/his routine. She was very active.
We also found another chick had come out of the box to eat.
But when we looked for the 3rd chick, it seems dead at the bottom of the nesting box. The mum keeps flying in to protect it but it seems motionless. It was quite a twist to first see Custard ok on both legs and then the other dead chick in the box.
If you can help please can you answer these questions:
Do budgies survive with a broken leg and is there anything we can do to help?
How long before we remove the dead chick? We don't want to start sticking our hands in the cage and create more havoc, shock and distress to the rest of the budgies.
The accident happened at around 19:30 last night.
I hope you dont think of me as being too forward but I don't know what else to do.
