Hello, Pickle was fine and chatting yesterday and this morning, this evening he is very fluffed up and has very watery poo, it also looks as though he has regurgitated some food. The only thing I can see is that he has eaten lots of a honey seed stick, that was in his cage. there was bits all over the bottom of the cage. Normally he never shuts up and he has not said one word or moved in the last hour. I am very worried, can anyone offer any advice of how best to keep him comfy, he is sat on top of his cage at the moment?

Take him to the vets tomorrow. When a budgie shows signs of illness they can go downhill very quickly because they hide it so well. He might be absolutely fine but the sooner you get him checked out the better Keep us updated x

Also cover his cage on three sides with a blanket, keep it quiet and calm in the room and turn up the heating if you have it. Try a hot water bottle on the bottom of the cage but put something on top of it so he won't burn his feet x

I think he is having me at it, poo a bit firmer, playing with his bell and now eating normal seed, it is already warm in his room so I have just put him back in his cage with a night light I have took the seed stick out in case it was that. He is acting like a child when you take them to the doctors, I have also took a sheet of paper of the top of the layers so it is clean to be able to see progress overnight. Oh dont they worry you though!

I don't like the idea of those seed sticks. It means they go back over and over for food, potentially getting bacteria on them on the stick itself, or because any minimal bacteria they have in their crop may be regurgitated and multiply on it, then they feed on it again.
In the meantime, clean out Pickle's cage - make sure his water and all the feed bowls are scrupulously clean - and anything like toys, objects or whatever that he "kisses' and regurgitates on.
Check that there is nothing he is eating that he shouldn't - paper, rope, curtains, fabric, mirror frames.
If they have a very slight upset, it can make them more susceptible to getting a bad bacterial bug, so clean really well around anything Pickle hangs around on, especially where there is water. (I'm thinking the sink at this point). Normally their guts can cope with a bit of bacteria, but just not when their resistance is low, and especially water-borne bacteria. They are arid condition birds, so not adapted for damp.

It's funny you should say that because he has taken to playing around the drainer, I do already clean out food and water every day but I had never thought about the seed stick like that before, you have a valid point, as for cleaning his cage it's the cleanest place in the house, ha ha but he is always licking his mirror so I will pay that more attention, I keep thinking about him, it is 1.20am, I'm trying to sleep, arnt we daft getting so worked up about them!

Just re read your post stace, he is always playing with a mirror coaster, you mentioned chewing things like mirror frames, will it hurt him?

Well I am happy to report Pickle seems well this morning, all the fresh poos overnight are of good structure and colour (sorry if you are eating!) He is eating and drinking and hopping about. I have disinfected everything he plays on. I will keep my eye on him today but he seems ok, very strange, I do wonder if he was just a greedy boy and ate too much, dont know if this is possible or not?

That's good news. I'd hate to see Pickle sick. He might have just eaten some veggies or something that didn't agree with him. Just keep a good eye on him and his poops for a couple of days to be sure.

BTW. Camomile tea (1/2 strength, real camomile) is a mild anti bacterial in the gut. Change his water out for the tea for a couple of days. (It will makes his poop temporarily change colour a little)

Glad Pickle seems better, we all worry like that too when it's one of ours so we know how you felt not sleeping and worrying all night.
