All hens are different. Some will accept wood shaving and some will not. I know my hens so deal with them accordingly. If your nest box is rough enough or it has concave to support the chicks feet, than you can put the wood shavings later when all the eggs hatch.

I have same issue with wood shavings. hens throw them away. Barrie - I added after 5 days after last chick hatched, but she threw them away within 2 hours. Others also throw them. What to do?

Hi Tariq Two things have worked for me. Deep nest boxes. Ever since I have 11 inch deep nest boxes, most hens have stopped doing so. The weather is hot here so there is no issue of temperature in big nest boxes. Adding regularly. When the hens are placed in the breeding cages, nest boxes already have wood shavings. As the hens start to remove the wood shavings, I keep adding every few hours. Eventually the hens stop doing so as they start laying.
