About 18 months ago we bought a very pretty baby budgie from a pet shop within a large garden centre, we called him Oliver. As the weeks went on little Oliver didn't grow although he ate well and seemed happy, he was a fantastic flyer, so graceful, he was like a little butterfly. The other birds though didn't want to know him, if he went to talk to them they'd fly away. They were never aggressive towards him. He spent his days chatting to the toys in the cage and singing happily. A few days ago I was amazed to see one of the other birds preening him very affectionately and later on another one feeding him. He was loving this! Later that day he was on the floor of the cage very quiet. I was going to put him in a smaller hospital cage but decided to leave him as he wasn't distressed. About an hour later Oliver died......I miss him so much but am so pleased he made friends on his last day. Do you think the others knew?.....A few days after we bought Oliver we bought Dicky from the same place. It soon became obvious Dicky couldn't fly. The shop didn't want to know. Dicky is a happy bird and is expert at climbing! I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a bird from one of these places, I just hope little Oliver was as happy as he could be in his so short life.

I do think that budgies know when one is sick.
When my blueboy was in his final days, Snowy started preening him and sitting with him to take care of him.

Really sorry to hear about Oliver, but how interesting that your other budgies changed their behaviour towards him. I suppose animals have ways of sensing things that we can't even imagine.

That's such a moving story im so sorry about little Oliver. They do care about each other, i have two non flyers and they sometimes find themselves on the floor, i always put branches out for them to climb back up and i have watched the other two that can fly go down to the floor and show them the way.

So sad about sweet little Oliver, Lesley, but like you, I am happy he got companionship in his last days. I agree that the other birds can sense if something isn't right. I feel Sparky knew Bluey wasn't going to be around with him for long - I always wonder if that is why he was constantly, and I do mean constantly, with him. That's nice to know too, Skysmum, that the others help out.

That's right, budgies know when one of them is not well. For example, hens only feed cocks when they are sick.. I am sorry about Oliver. Rest in peace little one.

Sleep tight little Oliver, it's lovely that they took care of him and he died peacefully. Mine did fret when Bubbles was poorly so yes I believe they know. (She is better now thank goodness). Budgies are very intelligent, they understand so much!

Thank you everyone for your kind words I didn't know BB that hens only fed cocks when they were sick, I'll watch out for that one (hope I don't need to though)

Rest in Peace, sweet little Oliver. Budgies are loving creatures who take care of their families. I've learned that on this forum. Although short, Oliver's life was filled with love.
