While I am not a breeder, Faceman, the benefit of cage breeding over colony-breeding is safety for both the adults and the chicks. Plus you get to put couples together to produce particular colours if that is what you wish. Budgies are notoriously territorial when it comes to finding a nest and will fight terribly over nest boxes, sometimes fatally. Also the young chicks can be killed by adults wishing to use the nest box. Of course sometimes this happens with the chicks' own parents, but much more so if they are being raised in a colony situation.

Thank you Hezz. When I had budgies 20 yrs ago I never really knew what I was doing had a book but did not tell me much and of course did not have this lovely place..so if I don't have cages I'm not doing anything wrong? I know I must not let brother and sisters breed togiver but that is sorted by good house keeping! What I'd like to know what disinfectants should I use??

The best animal-safe disinfectant is called F10SC. It is super super concentrated, so you use a really small amount diluted in water. It seems expensive if you just go on the weight, but because of little amount you use, it ends up being the same or less than other products.
