ok, here goes for a poss silly question.... ive recently got 2 budgies, both have french moult so cant fly, only climb the bars and jump from perch to perch. the hen is groing new tail feathers which are very weak & bent. they are in a large cage ( 26" w x 14" d x 24" h )would in the future,it be possible to add another budgie to the cage- or would it be overcrowded? just thinking that as they wont fly, that a normal budgie would use the flight space that they are incapable of useing. hope that makes sense!

Hi. Just a reminder... Before introducing new birds, quarantine them, in a separate room. Adding any new birds into a cocks cage is usually not a big problem, but there is always the exception. Adding new birds of either sex into a cage with a resident hen is something not to be taken lightly. Hens are often very territorial & have been known to injure or kill new birds of either sex introduced into their cage space. One suggested way round this problem is to place both cages of old & new birds close together for a few days after the quarantine period & let the birds get to know each other. Fly around together several times under supervision, to see how they get on. If they seem to get on well you can try them in the one cage, but prepare for the fact that some may never get on together in the same cage...B.J.

I am sure it would be possible, but I wouldn't, Debbie. With two not flying and therefore in the cage most of the time, to me it seems too much. I am very much of the "bigger is better" opinion and don't think a cage can be too big, even if the birds are out of it most of the time. My second (quarantine/suncatcher) cage is not much smaller than yours (and mostly in it's height)....... I wouldn't keep three budgies in it. I must stress, this is my opinion only.

thanks for the advice, its greatly appreciated at the moment it is just a hypothetical question, i went to the petshop to buy some millet-spied their buds in there & it got me thinking! ive decided that when funds allow i will get the ferplast piano 6 for them, then atleast i have a quaranteen cage if i ever decide to have another 1 ( or 2!) Lucy ,the hen is always going to be a climber, her new tail feathers are coming through & they are all bent, have scalloped edges to them and the main shaft is very very fine Eric is having more luck-they look more normal but not sure he will have the freedom of flight. thanks again x

Your welcome. Are you giving them a high-protein diet? Or protein supplements? This does seem to help the feather growth, and from other members stories, it does seem that the birds can have good times and bad. Good in that they do manage to grow some decent flight feathers and have a flutter around, and then bad in which they lose these flight feathers and the next lot(s) too. I am sure they will bring you tons of fun regardless.
