Hi can anyone give me advice on my Budgie, he has developed a bald patch on his head. He seems to be a bit itchy too. Took him to the vet and the drops he put on his head almost killed him, he went into a scratching frenzy and his head started bleeding i had to put him under the tap to give him some relief. His head has healed but the baldness is getting worse and he is puffed up and not looking happy at all but still eating and drinking. He is 13 years old but hate to see him deteriorate like this, is this just old age? can I give him something to help?

Hi Viv66 Could you possibly add some photos of your budgie, it might help our members to give advice. Thanks

Did the vet say what the drops were for? It is hard to give advice without knowing what we are dealing with - photos are always helpful.

sorry, he didn't know what the problem was but thought he would try treating him for mites, I binned the tube but sure it said 'Xeno 50'. I'm trying to get pics of him - the camera isn't doing as it was told:(

If you can, you should see an avian vet. Normal ones don't usually have a clue about birds. Sad but true.

Xeno (50 - there are other strengths apparently) is a topical ivermectin spot-on thingy, so yes, sounds like he was treating for mites.
Doesn't explain why it drove poor budgie crazy though, or what the original bald patch was caused by.

Perhaps the vet applying spot on to his already irritated head might have not been good. Usually the spot on would be applied between the shoulder blades Aloe Vera gel can be used to stop soreness or irritation on skin. I have used it on tiny baby budgies who have been plucked and sore with no ill effects and as its not greasy it doesn't mess up their other feathers. Maybe that might help any itchiness?

Yeh I think you right Nat he shouldn't have put it on his bald patch. He head was looking better (still bald) but today he has started itching again and started bleeding again. i have just showered him to see if that would help and put on E45 as is looking very dry:( I absolutely hate seeing him like this and feel cruel leaving him. I'm told not to take the vet and agree as they don't seem to know much but the nearest Avian vet is nearly 3 hours away from where i live. I will get some Aloe Vera gel tomorrow. What about Sudocream? it's really good on a babies sore bottom so do you think this might help?

It well could. An aloe leaf is probably better still. I know Salvon is good too, and budgie-safe. I didn't realize the vet put the stuff straight onto his already sore head! Even I wouldn't have done that!

i have just taken my Budgie to vet again - I know it wasn't advised but hate seeing him upset. He put different stuff on for mites (on his back this time) gave me some antibiotics and told me to put more Sudocream on his head. I have ordered some Aloe Vera Gel as suggested as well so here's hoping although he did say if he doesn't improve in a week to think about putting him to sleep as he is distressed. Thank you for taking the time reply to me and will update how he gets on just in case anyone may find themselves in this position.

Poor little chap. When the aloe vera gel arrives you can make up a spray bottle and give him a regular spray as well as using it direct, it will give him all over relief. I hope he gets better soon.

Poor little guy. I hope he improves with the new treatment and the aloe vera. It is so difficult to see these little ones so distressed.

Good luck with it all, Viv. I do hope the multiple approach manages to give the poor fellow some relief. Fingers crossed for a good result.
