I wouldnt risk it-would sort it out sooner rather than later keveinandmia-you could be away from them for a short while and they decide they want to explore the top of the cage (as budgies do)...its really not worth risking the life of your birds is it? I'm going to have to I'm afraid because I don't have any more money I can spend on them. I've spent over 100 the past few days and I don't have anymore. How did they survive 20 years ago when ppl didn't know all this stuff??

How did they survive 20 years ago when ppl didn't know all this stuff?? They quite often didn't survive for very long. We had several budgies when I was a kid, 4 I think, and that was in about 16 years, so the average lifespan must have been 4 years, nothing compared to the 13 years I've seen budgies living for now days.

Also how do these birds survive in the wild when it seems just about anything will kill them... You are probably right but it all seems just a tad bit over the top in my opinion. I don't even look after myself as well as these birds need. All this stressing about everything is kinda taking the fun out if it all... There's no fun in a dead bird. If you were to touch it in with a bit of Hammerite, which I am told is safe for birds, it wouldn't take long and give you peace of mind. You can get small pots that aren't too expensive. I hear ya, yeh that's what I plan to do I just can't do it yet, I really haven't got the money, no matter the price. If they die then its my fault and I will learn for future. I completely respect what you are saying I guess I just need to learn for myself. I need to chill out a bit and stop stressing cuz it's gonna kill me nevermind the birds.

Oh dear ...I hope your budgies will be ok and don`t die through it being a learning curve for you . Why dont you keep them in the cage they are in already and put the other one back up for sale maybe someone could buy it and do the repair work thats needed on in it re the rust then you could put the money you get back towards getting a new cage when you can afford it

Maybe try and cover the rust areas with a tree branch (fruit tree) so the can't get to it until you can make the repairs needed.

Sorry but i have to agree with every one-we are not trying to stress you out but unfortunatly any pet costs quite a bit of money to look after well...i think selling this cage and keeping them in a smaller yet safe cage is a great idea as they wont be locked up in the cage as already they are coming out....zooplus is a great site,i know you said you had bad experiences with on line shops but i have used them alot with out any probs

I will put the cuttlefish bone over the little bit on the back bar and maybe hang a toy or there mirror from the top bit where the tiny bit of rust is, that way they can't get to it! Thanks!! I really don't want to put em back in that small cage cuz it's is just so small for the 2 of em.they look so much happier in the big one!

All you are doing with this is purposely bringing the birds to where the rust is. You have only had your birds a matter of days and probably so far they are still settling. Especially if they are young birds, they are going to be all over this cage when they are feeling more settled, and there will not be a piece of it they don't explore. They are not going to look very happy dead. Read more: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/5340/2nd-hang-cage-16mm?scrollTo=71374&page=2#ixzz2LUrN1IAL

They can't get to it with what I have done.

I understand with the money not everyone has the funds but when taking on a animal or bird u have to do the best u can to make there work a safe place. Rust is a very bad idea covering it with something they will eat and mouth like a cuttlebone encourages them to that area an most have them lil metal clips on and will go rust to. The fact is that the birds will get Ill or die. I did the same thing brought a cage second hand and it went rusty I just binned it ! I know it's like throwing money away :-( Its up to u I u r goin to cover it maybe get some wood and tie wrap it over that area or keep all toys and perches away so it's not a area they will travel to but u r takin a risk !

I was suggesting, as a temporary measure, that the rust area be covered with a branch to block access to the rust. Adding cuttle fish and toys will encourage them to investigate the area while playing with the toys/chewing the cuttle fish.

Could you take a picture of the cage and the rust so we can see better what the problem is?

Yeh ok ill admit the cuttlefish and toy is a bad idea, I only thought to use them cuz that's all I've got at the mo and they haven't been near them since I put them in lol.. So what kind of wood should I use? Can I buy one of the wooden branch perches and tie that to the cage or should I use a flat bit if wood or something? I will take some pics later but you guys will have to add me on Facebook or Skype or something. Maybe Skype would be better? Aaluwkit@hotmail.co.uk. If I get some of that hemmorite stuff can apply it strait on or will I need to sand off the rust first

Could you not create a photo bucket account? Upload the pictures from you computer and post the image code onto here so the pictures are available for all to see?
