I really want to get all crafty again and start painting.,if i did i would be using acrylic paint but is this ok around Elfie? i am only in a 1 bed flat but would go in the bedroom to paint when Elf is in the lounge, thing is he sleeps in the bedroom at night so if harmful in any way i dont want to put him at risk and will not paint...Also if any paints are safe then which ones are??

I'd have thought that the very small amount of paint you would be using (as opposed to the amount needed to paint a wall or whatever) would mean that it is unlikely that it would have any ill-effects, especially if it wasn't particularly near him. I am not sure if acrylic paints contain solvents or if they are fairly stable compounds? They dry quickly so that presumably means that they are not evaporating for very long. What do others think?

acrylic paint would be fine since it is water based and there are no fumes. I use oil paint, but paint in a different room to where I keep the birds. I think even if you were using oil paint there is such a small amount of paint on the pallette that it would not affect the birds, what you are really smelling is the linseed oil which is the base of the paint and harmless. If you are going to start painting I would say give oils ago! they are much more versatile and much more fun!

Gaile, have you had any problems when you have been working with your paints? Or are your birds well out of the way?
