Hello my name is Amy. Today I bought a 5 month old male budgie called cedric. He's a little shy but I've only had him a few hours. his colours are blue/green and yellow.
what I want to know is other than his grit, millet spray and budgie seed what other seeds can he eat? I have pet rats so I make there own rat mix up and part of it consists of seeds and grains. I have a 60l tub full of linseed,Canary Seed, Sunflower Seed, Safflower seed, White & Red Millet, Hempseed, Groats, Buckwheat, Milo, Paddy Rice, buckwheat, barley, pumpkin and perilla.
and what safe fruits and veg can they have? I read somewhere that broccoli can be dangerous is this true?
thanks amy

Welcome and hello to your new budgie. Mine love broccoli and cress. I'm sure people will come up with lots of things for them to eat.

Welcome, Amy and Cedric! When you can post a picture of him for us. (Sorry - just noticed you already did!)
You could try giving Cedric some carrot. This is my budgies' favourite vegetable. I always get organic ones to be on the safe side. Some people grate it or shred it with other veg (peas, for example) but mine like to have a good size bit in a clip fixed in the bars and let them work away at it - good exercise as well as good nutrition. You may have to be prepared to waste some as he may not go for it immediately. Also, if it is a nice organic carrot, try putting the top of it in a some water and see if the greens will re-grow from the top. If they do, give that to him as well. Mine love nibbling the greens.
I am sure you will get other suggestions - good luck!

Wow Cedric is gorgeous! Mine didn't eat or drink for about two days, or so I thought. It takes them a couple of days to settle in and trust its ok to eat in public so to speak.

Likewise, mine took quite a while to get going. He has got a banquet there if he does fancy a nibble, but I've read it is best to start them off with just plain old seed and water, perhaps a bit of millet.
I think mine took about two weeks to pluck up the courage to approach the millet but once they did they were at it constantly.
They are timid wee things to start with and your Cedric doesn't yet know that you are going to be a lovely owner.
He is beautiful. He looks quite a dark shade of blue which I haven't seen before.
AND he is both sitting on his swing and has been out and about already. He is doing fine!

Thanks everyone for your replys. ive had him out again earlier I pick him up to get him out. id like him nice and tame so after having him a couple of hours I thought I'd handle him and he didn't bite. i played some budgies chirping on u tube and he chirped back bless him and very loudly too!
the seed mixture I've listed in my first post could someone tell me if all that is ok to feed budgies please?
we are getting him a bigger cage tomorrow as the one he's in is only temp and too small. the one we are getting him is 39cm x 39cm x 60cm tall. does this sound ok? The plan is to let him have loads of time out of the cage in the day with his cage door being open.
His colour is like a blue but with hints of green underneath,it's such a beautiful colour it's not something I've ever seen on a budgie before and my dad used to breed budgies years ago.

Most of us with only a few birds buy Trill for their basic seed mix. It's got a good mix of seeds plus added iodine and minerals. If you don't use a mix with those added extras, keep a cuttlebone (for calcium) and an iodine bell in their cage to nibble on.
To make your own seed it's generally a mix of Plain Canary, White Panicum, Red Panicum, White French Millet, Jap Millet. The Canary seed makes up around half of the mix. (Ask in separate thread about exact mix, as this is just from memory as I've only made it up a few times myself and now just use Trill for ease factor)
The sunflower and safflower are too big for budgies to eat, and also are very fattening due to oil content. Usually these are feed in small amounts to bigger parrots. You can crush them a give them a little as a treat, if they'll eat it, but it shouldn't form the basis of a good seed diet. Same with the pumpkin seed and probably the barley. Not sure about hempseed, buckwheat, milo or paddy, or perilla.
People do feed groats, but they soak them. When soaked you have to be careful about feeding it clean and only leaving it with them for a short time due to contamination risks. Budgies are particularly susceptible to water borne bacteria in stagnant water or wet veggies and fruit, as they are Australian dry climate birds. Water only comes with the rains in the wild, and evaporates quickly.
