So I've set up my new cage, and now all I need is a bird, which I'm getting next week!

If that blue thing is what I think it is, please take it out. Is it a snuggle-hut? These can cause budgies to become caught up in them, swallow pieces of the cotton and become very ill if not die, and are totally unnecessary. Your bird needs to have room to be able to flit back and forth across the cage to allow exercise so it is best to set up your toys in the corners or the cage, to reduce wasted space. No sand-sheets - bad for budgies' feet; causes bumblefoot. For your perches, your new friend will thank you for providing it with natural branches, if at all possible, otherwise dowelling of different sizes, so the budgie's feet get some exercise. I realize this may seem rather critical, but it is better to find out these things beforehand, rather than risk the health or even life of your budgie. And remember also to make sure all toys are rust-free. The only truly safe metal to use is stainless steel, as it doesn't rust.

Okay, thanks for the advice! I removed the hut, and yeah...I only cared if the toys+cage contain zinc or not, but at least they're safe! And I DID want to buy a natural wood perch, it's just that they didn't have the right kind I wanted...

You can get nice java perches on ebay and not to expensive The joys of internet shopping! I don't do it as a rule ........ I think I could get a little carried away. And this way the OH spends more on his bikes ....... so he can't complain when something does crop up, like Smudge's op. Devious thinking I know.

Now, I was looking at my snuggle hut (Now used by me to warm up my hands with ) And worrying about escapes. Then suddenly, I looked at the things on top of the snuggle hut...And, don't mean to brag, but I came with a really creative idea! I used the things as locks, so the bird won't escape! And I'm getting the bird next weekend!

Actually, I got my Feathered Friend today! He/She is a bit shy, and didn't "Thrash Around" much in the box. He/She has been chirping at the store, and I got him/her at Big Al's. Guess I know my friend's personality already! And the locks are shiny, so no zinc there. But I dunno if it's stainless steel or not. When my feathered friend starts eating, I'll prepare fresh vegetables for him/her. Pics will come later.
