That is the question, and it actually goes on in the Shakesperian play to ask "for what is a man if thout shalt not colony breed?" But let's look at the facts; You have an aviary full of birds, heaps of nest boxes covering more than what is needed, slightly more males than females and there you have it! Utopia on a stick, right? Well maybe, there are pros and cons, in the colony the chick is vulnerable to a rogue female, jealous of her rivals (just like the workplace), that don't happen in the individual breeding cage, but in there, there is a higher chance of the mother killing her young, or of the father doing so, which never happens in the colony, so yes, there ARE PROS AND THERE ARE CONS, weigh it up folks and remember the song by Meatloaf; "I would do anything for love, but I won't cage breed, no no I won't cage breed, coz I'm a colony breeder, yeah I'm a man, a colony breeder, yeah yeah" and so on.

Ask any expect what to do and they will tell you it's a no brainer, that cage breeding is the only way.

Cage breeding for me too. Colony breeding has too many complications.

Colony breeding is just plain scary! Apart from the possible bloodshed, if you have related birds in there you could be closely inbreeding. Also a cock might run 2 or 3 hens at a time and favour feeding only one of the hens, giving the other poor hens a hell of a job bringing up their chicks on their own.

Please. Don't colony breed! I tried it once and never will again. In 2009, I started breeding budgies for the first time. I colony bred. We had 4 budgies so 2 pairs. The first pair laid an egg, but didn't sit on it, so we fostered it to the other pair. When the chick hatched I was so happy. He was my first bred budgie. Sadly though, his real mum went into the other pairs nest box when the chick was about 2 weeks old and killed him. I will never make the mistake of colony breeding again.

I tried it and would never colony breed again although I was lucky and never lost any i,t was just so difficult and worrying especially when the chicks started coming out. of the nest box. Then I did have trouble with a hen from a previous clutch going in the nest box and throwing out the hens eggs. So cage breeding is the best and safest way to breed Imo.
