Stress in today’s budgerigars
We all know the devastation AGY can inflict on our stud of birds, now is the time we need to manage this disease.
Correct me if I am wrong on any point as these are my own findings and opinions.
Any budgerigar put into a stressful situation may develop AGY, Mega bacteria or going light, three descriptions but only one disease.
I say may develop as I believe a large % of the UKs budgerigars have AGY which is not harmful until they become stressed.
How do mine become stressed, showing, transporting, overcrowding in the aviary, introducing new stock and when I break breeding pairs up.
How do I plan to avoid stress; It is my intention to show current year and one year old birds only.
After a breeding bird reaches two years old it will be allowed to breed until it/they decide to stop breeding. By doing this I will not be putting them under any stress as the choice will be theirs.
Overcrowding; My next project after the breeding season will be the building of a small aviary in my main birdroom, this will house any birds that are not happy in the main aviary
New stock; Any outcross purchased or exchanged will be housed in a purpose built quarantine area.
Transporting will be avoided where ever possible
Drinking water I believe is a haven for disease, drinkers need to be sterilised every day , a 15 minute soak in hot water with a dilution of F10SC is the ideal way.
As a precautionary measure add 1ml of F10SC in 1 litre of clean water given for 3 consecutive days once weekly.
These are the actions I have planned they may not always happen as per the plan but it will not be for the want of trying.

Hi dear friend,
I can completely agree. I would only add. Stress might be trigger more latent diseases. Not only AGY. According to my opinion the most dangerous periods in our budgerigars life are: a new bird, a change of cage (bird) location and transport. Certainly I do not consider anything concerning shows. I would mention the most frequent diseases which kill our birds:
1/ Tumours, 2/ Kidney and liver disease, 3/ AGY, 4/ Various yeasts and Mildew (very frequent killer) 5/ BFD (FM) and PBFD
other diseases we do not see so often.
As you wrote Barrie - water and our drinkers are seedbed for bacteria and yeast. (damp places and corners in cages and aviaries too)
I also believe that immune system of our birds is very important for them. It can decide how our bird will react to a stress and whether a latent danger will develop or not. It is directly connected with a feeding plan.
Take care Ales

I use vanodine v18 to remove stubborn stains Nigel................i was in the company of a leading vetinarian surgeon, he warned me never to use virkon s , i do not know if the dodgy contents were removed over the last two years but i play safe and never use it.
