Today is the anniversary of Bluey's demise. Here is my tribute to him:
The best little budgie I have known. I love………
• That Cam, then just 10, wanted a budgie as a pet, and christened you Sir Bluey.
• How our elderly neighbour wanted to know how you got a knighthood so young…
• The day we brought you home – 4th of December 2005
• How you won us all over in no time at all, eating the little black seeds out of the egg and biscuit and getting the rest all over your beak.
• How you tucked your little head in under our noses and very early learnt to make a “kissing” noise…..
• How once you learnt to say “Give us a kiss” the rest followed rather quickly after - hello Bluey… come on… gorgeous…. cute little bird….who’s a good boy…. But you never quite got the hang of beautiful. It remained “bootle”, but we knew what you meant.
• How you would mix up your grammar and insist on “cute little good boy gorgeous”……
• How you would sit on the tap over the bathroom vanity in the mornings so that everyone talked to you as we filed in to clean our teeth…..
• How Drew always moved you off the tap onto his shoulder because he was afraid you would poop on his toothbrush!
• How you would lean over from on my shoulder and gently grab my lip if I wasn’t paying you enough attention….
• How you decided my big toe was the love of your life, and tried to jig it, wrapping your wing around my foot…..
• How you would sit on my shoulder in the shower and bath yourself in the mist…
• How you would sit on our shoulder and give our ears a “cleaning”. Soft little nibbles that tickled but also felt lovely and occasionally you would give the very softest little “meep” into our ear.
• How you sulked the whole time I was away – 2 weeks – while I visited my elderly parents……and a further 2 days after I came home!
• How you would sit on the top of the book I was reading, and look at the words as though you were reading too….
• How you seemed horrified by the addition of Smudge to your world! I am sure you had decided you were human with special powers.
• How Smudge used to try to land on you, rather than next to you, so you spent all your time flying away from her. Poor little girl just wanted to be friends…..
• How it took a good 12 months before you accepted that Smudge was here to stay and you may as well be…….maybe not friends, exactly, but not strangers either….
• How you decided a peaceful life was only going to be had by removing yourself from Smudge’s attempts to argue….
• How the only thing you would assert yourself over was….vegemite!
• How Smudge learnt to say “give us a kiss, Bluey” just like you, so that we couldn’t tell from listening who it was saying it.
• That I decided I couldn’t leave that gorgeous little green male at the bird show to go home with anyone else. He, who we christened Sparky, and after quarantine time attached himself to you – you were his very best friend.
• I am so happy that you did get to experience a bird friend. Where-ever you were, Sparky wasn’t very far away.
• That Sparky tended to you throughout the whole of your fight against the tumour that eventually you succumbed to…….
• Your fighting spirit throughout your ordeal. I started to call you the budgie with nine lives, as you rallied yet again from another set-back………
You were given a “knighthood” at a very young age, but you certainly lived up to the title. You were a true little gentleman.
You taught me a patience I had never found before – not through my children or the myriad of other pets I had had through the years.
In life and death you went with dignity and courage.
You will always be remembered, you are forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace my beautiful little Blue-Bird.
Your little tombstone still stands straight and tall, your plaque as shiny as the day it was put up.
