Hi everyone. Need some advice AGAIN!!! My poor Oscar has got a poorly foot. I have separated him from the other buds and he is in a little 'carry' cage. He seems to have very little use of his left foot. Because he is such a chubby chappie he often falls to the floor - mainly cos the girls pick on him. I have managed to get a closer look at his foot today and will try and post a pic. It appears red and slightly swollen at the point, (in the middle) where each claw comes out. This ocurred the night before last when they must have had a night fright as I found them all in most peculiar places in the morning. So I think Oscar injured his foot then and now it has swollen. I have him in a position where he doesn't have to climb and when he is not in the hospital cage I just put him places to sit. He is eating and drinking (guardian angel) as normal and is quite perky. Is there anything else I can do for him apart from getting him to rest it? Your advice would be much appreciated. Thank you. Not sure if the pic is clear enough.

Would help if i mentioned how i treated her . I used to soak her foot in cooled boiled water with a little epsom salt in, make sure you rinse his feathers off after in clean water if he gets the salt water on, then i used to apply sudocrem. Sometimes this can help alone but i had to get anti b's to work with it. Try the salt wash and cream for a couple of days first though, it does look a bit infected.

Yes, ordinary salt will be fine to get started but i think the epsom salts draws out any infection.

Yes, ordinary salt will be fine to get started but i think the epsom salts draws out any infection. Thanks Skysmum. I have dashed out and managed to get both Epsom Salts and Sudocrem. Oscar's foot has suitably been bathed and now has the cream on. He seems pretty content, stuffing his beak as per usual. Do you have any idea of how long it will last and at what point AB's will be necessary if at all? Thank you so much for the instant advice.

See how the salt and cream treatment go for a couple more days, if you see improvement wait and see for a while longer but if after a couple of days there is no improvement or its getting worse i would take him to get Anti B's. IF it is Bumblefoot it can spread and be painful so keep an eye. Sky's went on for quite a while because i think she had had it for a while but was doing a good job of hiding it. I hate to worry anyone Shirl and it may not be BF but its worth knowing about it and keeping an eye out. Keep us posted.

Can't add much to Skysmum's post. Use the cream on his foot but if he doesn't improve or gets worse, the vet might prescribe ABs or antibiotic cream.
If it is Bumblefoot, that's sometimes associated with Vit A deficiency. Just check above the cere for any staining. And remove any plastic, sandpaper or concrete perches. I'm guessing you don't have any of these, but just in case.

Thank you Skysmum and Stace. I have no plastic, sandpaper or concrete perches, have all natural wood or dowelling, and newspaper on the bottom of the cage. All my buds eat carrot so I don't think it would be a VitA deficiency. Oscar's cere is fine too. I do try and do the best for my buds as we all do, but I suppose things can't go right all the time. Have bathed Oscars feet (yes both feet just in case) this morning, and put cream on the poorly one. On examination first thing it did look lovely and clean and not quite so inflamed so fingers crossed it's on the mend. Thank you so much for your advice - what would I do without the forum??

So glad the little chap's foot is looking a bit better today shirl, you may have nipped it in the bud which is great. Like you my buds have always had natural perches etc and my Sky still got it so i think its just one of those things. If he has injured it the salt and cream will work its magic anyway .
