A few days back when I took Filamel out of the aviary I noticed some blood splattered on the white walls. Checked every bird and found nothing, so assumed it had come from Filamel who was later diagnosed as having some sort of prolapse inside and the vet thought it was probable too. Having disenfected the aviary today and Filamel not being in there at the moment I was surprised to find blood splatters this afternoon !!! I have turned every bird upside down and checked vents again. No injuries, dirty vents or signs of bleeding with anyone. Percy the hen has a large tumour on her vent but that looks very clean with no sign of bleeding. There was no blood in any of the droppings, just splats on the wall below and behind the perch. Now I'm wondering if Percys tumour is rupturing slightly every now and then. The perch where the blood was behind is a good 9 inches from the wall so it actually seems the blood has come out with some force! Not even discolouring feathers which is odd Also Percy is still very lively and a good weight. I have had a hen with a tumour that ruptured and bled intermittently fairly recently but it was clear it was her as she had blood on her feathers and got ill with it. Is this the beginning of yet another hen going downhill :-( Its not been a good couple of months with my girls :-(

Oh Nat I'm sorry you seem to have another bird with something wrong. It's odd that you can't find any sign of which bird it has come from. I know nothing about their illnesses and am learning as I go along on this forum, some scare the life out of me. I do hope you find the bird so you can help it with whatever's wrong with it. Keep the faith.

Am i right in thinking you have a FM bud nat, its just that i had similar last summer and i realised it was my Jo with a broken feather. It wasn't obvious at first that it was him.

Yes I do have a FM bird. That would be a thought Skysmum, but the positioning of the splatters would make it unlikely I think as the walls are such a long way from the perches and he is a complete non flyer so I'd expect to see blood where he climbs round more then the walls. Without meaning to sound crude, it looks like somebody has passed wind and blown it out with force I sincerly hope it is Boz and a broken feather though!

That's what made me think of it Nat, it was exactly the same for me, it was splattered on the walls just like you say, but not on the perches. Freaked me out at the time because i just couldn't work out where it was coming from. My theory is that when a FM break's a feather there is some pressure which sort of spurts it, bit like a vein . Worth checking just to rule it out.

Oh wow, thats good to know. Thanks Skysmum :-) I have noticed that Boz has grown alot more flights lately on one side only and maybe that means theres more likelyhood of breakages. It would certainy explain the clean butts! :-) Unfortunately Boz is the one bird I can't handle at all as he has some kind of epeleptic fit if I pick him up (through fear I guess) and it takes him an hour or 2 laying on the floor with his legs paralysed before he comes back to earth! So I can't check him out closely :-( But I feel more at ease now from your info. Cheers :-)

I did at first with Boz! I thought I'd killed him! Bud is the same as well. I dread the annual ivermectin and claw trimming session with those two I have to put a little bed of shavings on the floor to lay them in until their legs work again!
