How many people here quarantine new birds? I rarely ever see this mentioned on forums.
If you dont you should. When we buy in new birds they always always get quarantined for 2-3 months in cages of there own, we currently have 3 pairs of zebs and a java being quarantined, this is vital if you do not want your birds to catch any kind of disease from the new bird/s.
Even if i know the breeder the birds still get quarantined, but i have not always done this it wasnt until me and my father went into partnership that i started doing it, we put the birds first. Its a must!

I never used too as it "took too much time" But i learned it is worth it. I now usually quarantine for about a month . And monitor their droppings, how active they are etc. Im just a pet owner though and the new bird usually gets quarantined down stairs, or sometimes up stairs with the others but in a separate cage. I'll usually give a fine misting of F10 in the room aswell. Im hoping to get a filter which kills things in the air aswell this will make things more efficient. If it's a breeder who iv'e gotten birds from in the past, as long as the birds droppings are ok and it looks happy enough i'll just stick it in with the others, because theirs a certain breeder that i trust very much so .

Thanks for the post Ryan, but i think you should quarantine every bird you buy, you never know a disease can spread fast.

I buy my birds from pet shops, which are in miserable conditions. So there is no way I put new birds with mine straight away. quarantine is very simple. They are put in a cage in a different room for at least a month. During this time, they are put on MEDPET 4 in 1 powder for 7 days. They are wormed as well. And they are treated with Avitrol Bird Mite and Lice spray. Once I am satisfied, they go to bird room.

Just put them in a different cage and room for about a month and a half! air born viruses and bacteria, mites and lice clinging to clothes, im sure it's FM which can travel through the dust birds get from the keratin on their feathers. You can never be sure joey .

Just put them in a different cage and room for about a month and a half! YES, when you know the birds are from a breeder and are in good health. NO, if you are getting them from pet shop and no idea where they came from.
