Hello all. Recently acquired a budgie, as explained here: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/5907/page/1/completely-new-nextI have no real idea with sexing the little guys, I only remembered pink/brown = girl, boy = boy from when I was little in a pet shop... But I have since learned it is slightly more complicated than that. This little one (Thunderwing Doomslayer) I THOUGHT was male, the cere was blue initially (when I guess he/she was around 4 months old), but since then it's been a flakey lilac brown colour, and suddenly blue again etc. So, over to the experts! Hopefully it's a simple one (I was hoping boy due to reading they're more likely to talk and are more vocal, but this one has been very vocal already so now I'm not too fussed) Thanks

I think boy. Only because the cere is too blue (especially in the second picture) to be a female. If he/she was a girl, the cere would be white/ powdery blue.

I agree with Nicola. Too blue for a girl, but not quite blue enough for a boy .......... but I think he is still maturing. Does he have an iodine block? Sometimes a brownish cere in a cock can be due to an iodine deficiency. Otherwise iodine in his water for a few days/ week is all that is needed to revert the colour to normal.

Thanks everyone He's got an iodine block, but he hasn't touched it at all, should I get the drops instead? He chews on pretty much everything else in his cage except that.

Mine do the same, but every now and again I surprise them chewing on it. I think they have trouble getting started on them if they are too smooth. I have scored the one my budgies have and this has helped. Just take to it with a serrated knife and make grooves along the sides. See how he goes then. If you want to try iodine drops, make sure you get a weak solution - 25mg/ml. Should be able to source this from a chemist/pharmacy quite easily. Then simply add 3 drops to 100mls of his drinking water.
