Is it necessary to feed budgie pellets? mine get trill budgie seed, cuttlefish, iodine block, millet and fresh veg and fruit daily.
if its important for buds to eat pellets can anyone suggest where I can purchase them in the uk? Id only need enough for 2 buds to last a month or so I don't want a sack full.
thanks amy

After one of my budgies was diagnosed with liver disease recently my vet presented me with this: available from www.parrotessentials.co.uk/harrisons-high-potency-super-fine-1lb-organic-bird-food/and basically said this is it for him for the rest of his life. Since he lives with other birds (who may have liver disease as well for all I know) this is the future for all of them. Too much fat in seeds it seems. Obviously some budgies live a long and happy life on Trill etc so it is not a simple thing, but maybe some birds have a vulnerability. My two original ones are under a year old and have never looked overweight. It is apparently famously difficult to get budgies to accept pellets. But I seem to have managed significant progress with this in the last 4 weeks by mixing up pellets (ground up, softened, hard) along with their germinated seeds and veg mix every time they get fresh food. It has been impossible for them to avoid sticking their beaks into them 4 or 5 times a day. I have now seen all three (excluding my 4th bird in quarantine) eating dry pellets from an upright dispenser. I say 'seem' to have made progress because in the last couple of days I haven't seen them doing this. Maybe they have been fooling me and we are not home and dry yet! The vet I saw most recently said that they can continue to have germinated seeds as part of their diet but they shouldn't have more than the equivalent of the size of 5 sunflower seeds each per day. The 1lb bag I got is about 2/3 used (of course most of these have gone in bin) so I don't think it would work out as that much more expensive than good quality seed mixes.

Your diet is good, no need to feed pellets.

I have to say I don't trust pellets. They are so unnatural. I supplement my birds' diet with lots of seeding grasses ........ of course I collect far more than three little budgies could possibly eat in a day, but they get a huge variety and get to pick and chose.

Pellets are not for me as well. Varied seed diet with fruits and vegetables is the best.

I don't say that the budgies (or me!) are having great fun with this, and I am sad that natural behaviour with seeds is not on the menu, but having nearly lost Woody to early and severe liver disease this seems - according to expert advice - like the only option. I will keep feeding them germinated seeds meantime and I am hoping that it may be possible to return to a more natural diet in the future.
