Hiya Well, I'm Terri Holt and I have 2 cats, 2 budgies and a dog... I actually just acquired the 2 budgies a week ago today. Last Sunday, i came across a beautiful white budgie with blue back and belly. He was advertised, pictured alone. There was a green/yellow and a blue/white pictured together on another ad from the same person. My intent on taking the budgie that was pictured alone was, even tho he was 1-2 yr old, to form a bond with him and try to at least make him finger tame. But later during that day, the person's daughter contacted me saying he'd never lived alone and had bred with a white female and bonded with her, could I take her... Obviously a bit dismayed because taming a budgie while there are 2 unwilling birds seem's impossible but I wanted to do the best by him so i took her too and presto! 2 budgies... I'm on a mission to find out if there is a possibility to tame both. I have been trying separately (the male seem's easier) but as soon as the female starts squawking loudly which she does every few minutes, he starts back and trying to look for her... That's when i lose him. I have wondered, if i look for a hand tame chick, would the others follow suit or would the hand tame chick lose it's tameness? Anyway, i'll have a look round the forum (it's so different to the one i'm used to) and see what i can find and i'll look forward to self educating from all the info here

hello and welcome...they may become a little tame with time, but as they have each other they don't need you for companionship xxx but have fun trying! loving the doggy is it a husky or malamute!!!

Thanks. I know they will never be 'tame' tame, i'd just like to be able to get them back in the cage faster than an hour and half - 2 hours without having my fingers bitten. Great work out tho!
My dog is a Tamaskan Dog ('breed in progress'). Bigger than a husky, leaner and more finely built than a mal. End goal is a working breed that looks like a wolf.

Hi Terri and welcome to the forum :-) I have got lots of older budgies that are not tame but they certainly can be trained to go back to the cage when you want them to what ever the age :-) The trick is to train them to come to a long perch minimum of 18 inches long and be delivered to the cage via the perch with a treat of millet spray hung inside when they do. It does take quite a alot of persistance at first but it will work in the end as eventually they get tired and after a few days of doing it they realise that you will always win in the end and after all it wasn't a bad experience as no hands were involved and millet is the reward. The larger the cage door opening the easier it will be. A flexible rope perch with wire through it is good for this as they seem to prefer landing on rope than wood. It is true that budgies will learn from a tamer one, but an older tame budgie would be better than a tame chick as it will be less likely to lose its tameness when let to fly with the others. Chicks are a bit too easily impressionable lol ;-)

Thanks nat, that's what we have been working on. I figured it would be better for them than actual hand contact.
Thanks mizloco. I have been slowly going through the bits and pieces here and there, there is some really interesting stuff. I have spent all (most of the) night trying to get some pictures, i'm curious to know what the colours are called. I think my female is a white Clearflight Pied and my male is a Recessive Pied, but this is just guessing based on matching nearest pics on the internet (i could have just described the same thing for all i know lol). I would just love a white double-factor spangle budgie, they are simply beautiful. I'm waiting to find a breeder with a young enough chick tho.

Hi Terri and welcome. Good luck with the taming. You will need to be patient and persistent and spend as much time as you can teaching them what you need them to do. Getting them to step up is the first hurdle, firstly in the cage and then when they get the hang of that, you can start outside the cage. Once you are ready for outside cage time, use your littlest room so you aren't following them all over the house .... oh yes and separate them for training at this stage otherwise you will never get a look-in.

Thanks. I have a smaller separate cage i put my male in, less room for him to move so i don't have to chase him as much (he seem's the easier out the 2). I did get him to put 1 foot on a finger while he was eating millet but then Skyla called for him and he bit me and ran off. I've been trying to find a way to keep her quiet because she will call for him every few minutes and when she call's, all is lost lol. It has only been a week tho, i guess time will help... I just hope i'm not over doing each session because i don't want them both to associate people with an annoying hand in the cage that stresses them out.

10-15 minutes a time is good. And every time you go through the room or past them, stop and have a quick "hello birds" ........ this sounds odd to beginners, but cheep and chirp to them ( as well. Don't stare at them for ages but blink, turn your head a bit and wink with the eye they can see. Budgies being a prey animal associate being stared at with being eaten, so not focusing rigidly on them makes them feel more comfortable.

Not staring at them makes sense... Never thought of that. Cheeping and chirping is becoming a second language Thank you
