I have just become the proud owner of two budgies (Elizabeth and Harold) as you can tell, I love giving my pets silly names (apologies to all Elizabeths and harolds on here!) I have a great dane (rosie) a long haired Chinese crested (nora batty) and three cats (lilly, Shelby shoo's and bigsy boo) plus rabbits, guinea pigs and hundreds of tropical fish.
having decided I would love some budgies, I have spent the last couple of months visiting this forum and breeders websites to learn all I can..............well the minute I bought my buds home, my mind has gone blank !!!!!! I need to know what seeds to feed (there are sooooo many different types!) I cant for the life of me remember what other food they would like, also what do people use on the bottom of their cages ?. at the moment Elizabeth and Harold have a normal kind of budgie seed, cuttle fish, grit, iodine block and a sand sheet on bottom of cage.
please don't worry about my cats getting the birds, I have a spare bedroom where I keep my fish and they are safely ensconced in there. I live in Hampshire......sorry if this was too long.

I'll leave the seed recommendations to the UK people.
Don't use sand sheets. They're not good for budgies' feet. Same goes for those sandpaper perches. Stores sell them, but they're not budgie safe.
Most of us use newspaper on the cage bottom, over the grill if you have one. It's easier to keep everything clean. Put seven pages or so in, pull out one every day or so, and then repeat. And remember, clean drinking water is really important.
Love the names.

Hi Jute and welcome to the forum I believe trill is the best seed to feed, but as I can't buy it in large amounts I use Versele Laga. I think the general view is to get them eating as much veg as possible along with some safe branches such as willow, apple and eucalptus as well as the staple seed diet Usually easier said than done lol! Looking forward to seeing some pics of your 2 new additions

thankyou so much for your welcomes, this site is awesome, i have started to read stickies about feeding and care, and i realised my birds did not know what feeders are so i put a bowl of seed and a bowl of water on the bottom of the cage and now they are eating and drinking. the fact that i actually got on this forum is a miracle cos i am useless with computers so please don't hold your breath for photo's (plus the fact i don't actually have a camera!)

Hi Jute and welcome. As Lousette mentioned, keep going back to the flagged threads at the beginning of each section (stickies) - they will always be at the top of the section and not be moved down by more recent threads. Heaps of info there, especially for people just starting out. For your water, you are best off getting them one of those sipper/valve drinkers that are made for rats and hamsters etc. This way you have no worries with the birds pooping in their water. Dirty water breeds germs and budgies can go down-hill very quickly once the get sick. So while the bowl of water is good to get them drinking first off, now is the time to move them on to a less worrisome water receptacle. Having said that the sippers are the best type to have, I have a hen who will not go near mine, and so I have had to leave one fountain-type container in, just for her! You will learn where to locate things in their cage so they stay clean, and for this reason it is best to position their seed and water up near the highest perch.
