Hi. My name's Zofia. I haven't got a budgie yet but I'm intending to get one in the next couple of months. I have 4 rabbits and 2 guinea pigs. I always like to try to find out as much as possible before taking on a new animal so I'm here for the next few weeks to learn as much as I can and hopefully get some help once I have my budgie. I look forward to talking to all of you. xx

Hi and welcome, Zofia. Do you have any idea at this stage where your budgies are going to come from? Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi and welcome, Zofia. Do you have any idea at this stage where your budgies are going to come from? Any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Hi, I've been on here reading all night. I really want to make sure I get everything right. I searched online and there's a breeder about 5 miles from me so I was thinking I might give him a ring to see if he's likely to have any young birds for sale in the near future. I'm not in a desperate rush and am happy to wait a couple of months for the right budgie if necessary. I had a budgie (Precious) when I was at Uni but I moved home for a while and she got attached to my Mum so I decided to leave her there. I was looking after Precious recently while my parents were on holiday and she passed away unfortunately while she was with me. She was 11 and a half years old. The 2 weeks she was here before she died I had a great time with her and for her last couple of days she was still chirpy but not very mobile so I was helping her to get up on her perches etc. Spending time with her again made me realise that I'd like to have my own budgie again that I can spend time with and training. I don't think my parents will want to get another budgie, they're not really animal people, so I've got all Precious's old stuff - toys and cage etc - I just need to give it all a good wash and throw away anything that's been chewed or that's worn out. BTW - like I said, I want to get this right so I won't be offended if anyone tells me I'm wrong at any point.

Something to think about while going though Precious's old toys ...... have a good look for rust. Not sure if you are aware, but rust is lethal to budgies. Happy budgie hunting.

Thanks - tbh anything that doesn't look as good as new will be replaced. All the plastic stuff I think is ok but there's a swing and a couple of bells that look old and they'll be going. What about wooden stuff - can I clean wooden ladders etc?

Yes, wooden stuff can be cleaned and recycled. A lot of people use F10 disinfectant to clean their budgie cages, toys and perches. But if you don't have that then I would use some very hot water and detergent, soak and scrub and then as a rinse soak them again in a weak vinegar solution, and dry in the sun if there is any to be had. While it sounds as though Precious died of old age (RIP little girl) it is best to be safe and make sure everything is spick and span for the new arrival.

Oh good - I used white vinegar and water anyway because it's what I use to clean the rabbit and guinea pig stuff. Nice and safe and removes bad smells.
