Thinking maybe a boy - can't see any white round the nostrils and it's a pinky purple cere. Am I right? I fully intended to wait a couple of weeks before getting a budgie but I went to talk to a guy about his budgies today and fell in love with this little darling and couldn't resist.

Oh beautiful! I can see why you fell for him/her. Can't help with the sex, sadly.

Yesterday he spent the evening climbing to the top of the cage, turning upside down and then dive bombing at the floor. He just kept doing it over and over so we've decided to call him Daley after Tom Daley (GB Olympic diver).

Toffee, how about getting him some wooden perches? Plastic one are not good for his feet, and gives no variety of thickness. If you have a source of safe for budgie trees, lop a bit off and he will thank you for it. In the UK apple and willow are great to use - they love chewing the bark off as well, so if you do get some, be prepared for a mess.
I should add that the correct sizing for their feet is so their claws go about two thirds the way around, but a little smaller and a little larger are good for variety as well.

Definitely swap out the plastic perches for natural wood. They can get awful things wrong with the feet on both plastic and sandpaper type perches, and at worst, get a foot infection that can kill them. Sorry to be so blunt, but it's really important.

The perches were swapped for wood they day after he came home. I've got some lovely natural wood ones so he looks like he's sitting on a tree now.

Good work. Sorry if that seemed picky, but unless we bring these things to people's attention, how are we going to learn? Can we see him in his little tree-house?

I'll try and get some pics in the next few days - my camera's out of batteries so I'll have to get some long life ones to replace them.
I got him a Vision cage in the end for £44.99 which I think is a bargain (when I took the old cage apart the base was completely split so it's a good job I decided to replace it). Daley loves it and I think it's great too. I love that both of the doors open making one large doorway and a landing platform - makes it really easy to get him in and out without him getting spooked.
