God we have those too Learner! They are VERY noisy (especially doing breeding time too) AND we have a flat roof as well (sounds more like a run way tho) Who needs an alarm clock!

When I was in Oz I was amazed by how outrageously noisy sulphur crested cockatoos were - huge gangs of them. But we were totally fascinated by the birds generally - incredible to see very colourful birds like rainbow lorikeets flying around like sparrows or starlings here. The one below was taken through our window. Oh, and Australian ravens! - I still do an imitation when I see ravens and rooks here. It's all coming back to me... Crows.

The cockatoos were out in force this morning outside my place, tearing up the neighbourhood! They're such hooligans. , sorry, but i love it. I can just imagine them turning up on their motorbikes in their leathers, Init . I would love to see hooligans like that round my place, i can see that they could be very destructive though.

Hezz, these are the ones I was thinking of - I think they are called Australian ravens. I love the way the call has the falling note - it always makes me think that they are profoundly disappointed with life! Sound file: www.anbg.gov.au/sounds/raven.au

A while back I had a big, beautiful flowering Oriental Lily on the balcony table, just by the balustrade. I looked out the french doors and one of the rascal cockatoos was delicately picking off the 20 or so gorgeous flower heads and throwing them on to the street below. By the time I noticed, there were only two stems left.

No one calls them ravens. More likely "b*^%#y crows!!!" The crows have been out in the street over the last few days as well. One of them has been making a helluva racket, throwing rocks down the tin roof across the road. They land in the gutter, where he goes down and picks them, taking them back up to the top of the roofline to begin all over again.

Maark, maark, maark, maark, maaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrk.... That last falling note is very odd.

I'm wondering if he's trying to build something in rocks on the roof and every once in a while a rock gets away on him.

And here are the hooligans. "We are the goon squad and we're coming to town.....arrkk, arrrk!" Just a few a shown here, but there were probably around 50 or so of them right outside my place in the trees. They're eating the berries on the trees and then throwing the stones on the cars parked below. Clunk! Clunk! Clunk! Thought I was taking a snap of the cockys, but ended up getting one of the dawn view from my balcony. If you keep going East for a bit, you hit Bondi Beach.

Been to Bondi, have seen a bit of Aus round Sydney too. When you come from a wee place like England, I never realised that somewhere else could be so vast and only in one city, let alone the whole country!
