Hi, I have a female budgie. She is around 6 months old. I have an aviary ordered for her from Rosemead. It will be added onto my african greys aviary. It will be double wired [where they share a panel] and will measure 6x4x3. I would have liked it to be bigger but it is my parents garden. I wasn't planning on getting a budgie, however she came in to my workplace [petshop] with a deformed beak. So we wouldn't have been able to rehome her. She is beautiful and has tamed up lovely. She jumps onto my hand and eats millet. She has been out of her cage and remained on my hand. I don't know how tame she might stay if I have to catch her from her cage to put her in her aviary though. She will only go in the aviary when the weather is fine [like my grey]. Both are indoor birds. I was wondering if it was a good idea to place a nest box in the aviary? Somewhere that she can go into to get out of the sun/breeze etc. There will be screening to provide shade and protect against rain showers. But didn't know if a nest box would be required/liked aswell. I don't intend to get any more budgies. So wouldn't be breeding. I don't know the sex of my grey so don't provide any nest boxes/dens incase I have a female and her being able to hide would make her hormonal. Is this something that should be considered for budgies also? Thanks for any advice. Rae

I'm not sure a budgie would actually use a nestbox for shelter as some of the larger parrot species will do. They tend not to want to enter a nestbox unless they are going to breed. It might be an idea to build a larger ply box say 18 inches long by 12 inches wide and 12 inches high with an open front to use as a shelter with a perch inside it and place it up at the highest point in the aviary. If she is wary of going in it at first then place some millet spray at the entrance and have the perch sticking out a bit from the front for easy landing :-)
