I have followed your thread with great interest and I am glad that there is nothing seriously wrong. It must be stressful to you as well as Grace. I know what giving blood is like, over and above normal tests, and truly understand why you wouldn't want to put your pet through it. I hope all turns out well from now on. Thank you

Oh dear, Rachael. That didn't really answer any questions, did it? Is Guardian Angel allowed? Hopefully it will be "just one of those things" and Gracie will be back with the others in a very short time. Fingers crossed, anyway. No not really lol! I think I am going to have to go on a hunt for a new vet which is a pain. Why do people have to retire! The next few days will be spent keeping an eye on her and yes I am still giving her the guardian angel to build her up. I am considering bringing her inside to look after her but I have three dogs and they might upset her too much right now. I am really hoping that she will be on the mend soon, my mum made a suggestion about her coming to live with the house budgies where she won't be bullied and will be able to eat more. Its all ifs and buts at the moment though :/

I've been checking on Gracie every hour but unfortunately she passed away a few minutes ago.

Oh, no, Rachael, that is terrible!
Are you able to contact your old vet? Maybe he/she would be able to recommend someone decent close by?
Rest in Peace, Gracie.

Oh, that's very sad. It's hard to know what's best to do if you don't know what's wrong. Fly high, Gracie. x

Thank you everyone. I am trying to keep positive and focus on the happiness that my budgies give me. I will definitely be searching for a new vet though x

So sorry to hear that Rachael I think the vet did you wrong in not prescribing baytril and also not taking a fecaes sample. I hope you can find a decent avian vet for the future. Not easy I know

Not easy I know He did give her an antibiotic injection though and said that she didn't have an infection, it was more likely a kidney problem :/ I wish there was something more I could have done for her but its so hard to treat budgies in time when they are ill.

But how did they know she didn't have an infection? I hope they took a fecael and crop wash sample to illiminate that cause. Otherwise its just guess work on their part :/

We can only take the vets word when stuff like this happens. I just wonder how the vet can elliminate infection as a cause without doing fecael and crop samples? Some antibiotics work better than others for certain things. Baytril has the broadest coverage on everything. Other antibiotics seem more specific to certain ailments. I have had birds with kidney problems and ultimately faliure, but it always takes a reasonably long time of knowing the birds not quite right before it actually gets sick to the point of fluffed upness. Just makes me wonder.... I'm surprised that blood cultures were sugested without doing fecael and crop samples first. You did all you could for her Rachael.
